Bihar: Maoists kill 10 villagers in 'revenge' attack
NDTV Correspondent, Thursday February 18, 2010, Jamui

Two days after the massacre of 24 policemen in Midnapore in West Bengal, there's been another Maoist attack in Jamui district of Bihar.

In what is being called a 'revenge' attack, 10 people of a village were killed and 25 houses were set on fire as over 120 heavily-armed Maoists swooped down on Kasari village.

The police were a kilometre from the place, but could not reach the spot as the Maoists had laid landmines on the road reaching the village.

Twelve people are also said to be injured in the attack, five of them critically. They have been admitted to hospitals at Sikandra and Jamui.

This attack was reportedly in retaliation to police arresting eight Maoists from this area, with help from villagers. After that incident, the Maoists had in fact threatened to retaliate.

Jamui has seen quite a few attacks in recently. Last week only, the Maoists had blasted the Howrah-line at the Narganjo railway station here.

Maoists had given a three-day bandh call in eastern part of Bihar to protest the killing of their activists. The bandh ended last midnight.

Now they have once again stiked back killing villagers. It is very pathtic situation. Why again, the villagers are protecting those terrorists. They can know their movements, plans comprehensively. And villagers do not alert police man and utimately they fellow villagers are killed. I think, there has to be extensive awareness stratigies to villagers so that those bloody maosits are not treated like Robin Hood.I pay my sympathy to all families effected. May departed soul rest in peace.
