Bees at Mayawati rally: Police to investigate
NDTV Correspondent, Tuesday March 16, 2010, Lucknow

Her garland made of thousand-rupee notes is what has her critics furious. But for Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister, the real sore point of Monday's controversial rally is the swarm of bees that surrounded her on stage as she delivered her speech to an audience of five lakh people.

So now, the Deputy Inspector General of Police has been assigned to find out where the bees came from. The case of who paid for the garland, meanwhile, is being investigated by the Income Tax Department.

Sources say that Mayawati's advisors are worried that bee hives near the stadium where Mayawati held her party's silver jubilee were deliberately set on fire. They're worried that whoever did this hoped that thousands of bees would enter the stadium and cause a stampede.

On Monday night, the BSP said in a press release, "Today when Mayawati was addressing a rally at the Ramabai Ambedkar Maidan, someone set fire to some bushes in a nearby compound of the Kendriya Vidyalaya and that set alight the bees from the beehive. These bees then moved rapidly towards the stage and wandered around the Chief Minister for at least an hour. After which they formed a beehive on top of the stage. Without fear, the CM went ahead with her speech so that the rally doesn't get disrupted. But an inquiry is being conducted to find out who has done this."

It would have been a lucky day for India if bees would have done their job by biting her and killing her. At least one corrupt leader would have been reduced.
