In Kolhapur which is an Indian National Congress (INC)-Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) stronghold, NCP's sitting MP Dhananjay Mahadik defeated Sena contender Sanjay Sadashivrao Mandalik, son of former Congress-NCP strongman Sadashivrao Mandlik, in 2014. Mahadik won the 2014 general elections with a margin of 33,259 votes. The NCP candidate polled 6,07,665 votes while the Shiv Sena nominee bagged 5,74,406 votes in 2014.
In general elections 2019, Dhananjay Mahadik and Sanjay Mandlik are again pitted against each other in this erstwhile royal seat of the Chhatrapatis of Kolhapur.
Sadashivrao DMandlik had represented this several times first as a Congress nominee (in 1998) and later as an NCP candidate.
The constituency has 17,58,300 electorates, including 9,09,326 males and 8,48,974 females.
Kolhapur recorded the highest voting in Maharashtra at 70.70 per cent during the third phase of general elections 2019.
The Kolhapur Lok Sabha constituency consists of Chandgad, Radhanagari, Kagal, Kolhapur South, Karvir and Kolhapur North Assembly constituencies from Maharashtra Legislative Assembly.
