Bharatiya Janata Party's Gopal Shetty will face actor-turned-politician Urmila Matondkar (Congress) in the Lok Sabha elections.
In 2014 Lok Sabha elections, Bharatiya Janata Party's Gopal Shetty had defeated Congress leader Sanjay Nirupam by a margin of 4,46,582 from the Mumbai North constituency.
Sanjay Nirupam lost the 2014 Lok Sabha election from Mumbai North constituency by a margin of about 4.5 lakh votes.
In the past, the constituency which witnessed two major changes before the elections of 1977 and 2009 (delimitation of 2008) was represented by some of the big names of Indian politics. VK Krishna Menon, late diplomat and politician had been elected to parliament from the constituency.
Historically, candidates from five political parties have also represented the constituency with the name of "Mumbai North" in Indian Lok Sabha which include Communist Party of India (CPI), INC, Bharatiya Lok Dal (BLD), Janata Party and and BJP.
The Mumbai North Lok Sabha seat has six assembly segments from the Maharashtra state assembly, they are: Borivali, Dahisar, Magathane, Kandivali East, Charkop, and Malad West.
