In 2014 general elections, Chintaman Wanaga of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was elected from the Palghar Lok Sabha constituency with a margin of 2,39,520 votes. Mr Wanga was polled 5,33,201 votes while his nearest rival Baliram Sukur Jadhav of BahujanVikas Aghadi (BVA) bagged 2,93,681 votes.
BJP's Rajendra Gavit won the by-elections held in 2018, when, then-estranged allies BJP and Shiv Sena were pitted against each other. BJP candidate Rajendra Gavit defeated his rivals, Shriniwas Wanaga of Shiv Sena and Damodar Singhda of Congress. The by-polls were held because of the death of BJP parliamentarian Chintaman Wanaga. The Sena, in a bid to outdo the BJP, fielded his son Sriniwas Wanaga.
In this constituency, BVA's Baliram S. Jadhav won in 2009.
In 2019 general elections, Gavit is contesting on a Shiv Sena ticket on a 'seat swap'.
The challenge is from former BVA MP Baliram S. Jadhav, who has the support of the 56-party Congress-NCP led Mahagathbandhan in the state. Since 2014, of the four reserved assembly segments, the BVA holds Boisar, Shiv Sena rules in Palghar and the BJP holds Dahanu and Vikramgad.
The constituency has a total electorate of 15,78,077, including 8,30,432 men and 7,47,645 women.
Palghar recorded 63.72 per cent polling when the seat went to polls on April 29 during the fourth phase of general elections 2019.
The Palghar Lok Sabha constituency consists of Dahanu, Vikramgad, Palghar, Boisar, Nalasopara and Vasai assembly segments from Maharashtra state Legislative Assembly.
