The Latur Lok Sabha constituency is currently held by the Bharatiya Janata Party or BJP's Sunil Gaikwad. In the 2014 general elections, Mr Gaikwad defeated Congress's Dattatray Gunderao by a margin of 2,53,395 votes. In 2014, the BJP candidate got 6,16,509 votes, while his nearest opponent from the Congress bagged 3,63,114 votes.
Shivraj Patil of Congress, former Union minister and Speaker of the 10th Lok Sabha, had represented this constituency 7 times - 1980, 1984, 1989, 1991, 1996, 1998 and 1999.
Latur, a reserved Lok Sabha constituency for scheduled castes, has been a Congress bastion in the past, where the party has fielded its local spice king, Machhindra Kamant, against BJP's Sudhakar B. Shrungare, a realtor who was nominated in place of outgoing MP Sunil Gaikwad.
The region which was devastated in the September 1993 earthquake and since recovered, has a total electorate of 16,82,607 voters including 8,98,919 males and 7,84,688 females.
Latur recorded a 57.94 per cent voter turnout in the general elections 2019. The constituency consists of 6 Assembly segments - Latur Rural, Latur City, Ahmadpur, Udgir (SC), Nilanga and Loha.
