Sangli, an Indian National Congress (INC or Congress) stronghold, was wrested from the grand old party in 2014 general elections by Sanjaykaka Patil of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) with a margin of 2,39,292 votes. The BJP candidate was polled 6,11,563 votes while his rival Congress's Pratik Patil bagged 3,72,271 votes.
In 2019 general elections, Sangli Lok Sabha constituency has a tough contest on hand with the late former Maharashtra chief minister Vasantrao Patil's grandson, Vishal Prakashbapu Patil, entering the fray on a Swabhimani Shetkari Sanghatana (SSS) ticket, as part of the Congress-NCP led 56-party Mahagathbandhan.
He is pitted against the BJP's sitting MP Sanjaykaka Patil. Vishal's nomination sparked a family feud with his elder brother and ex-union Minister Pratik P Patil quitting the Congress and politics.
The Sangli Lok Sabha constituency has 12 candidates in the fray for 2019 general elections.
Vasantdada Patil and his son Prakashbapu Vasantdada Patil had represented this constituency in the past. Prakashbapu Vasantdada Patil was elected from Sangli constituency five times.
The constituency has 16,49,107 voters, including 8,61,582 men and 7,87,525 women.
In general election 2019, Sangli recorded a 65.44 per cent polling against 63.52 five years back.
The Sangli Lok Sabha constituency consists or Miraj, Sangli, Palus-Kadegaon, Khanapur, Tasgaon-Kavathe Mahankal and Jat Assembly segments.
