In the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had snatched the Pune Lok Sabha seat from Indian National Congress (INC or Congress), with its candidate Anil Shirole winning by a margin of over three lakh votes. Shirole was polled 5,69,825 votes while the runner-up Dr.Vishwajeet Kadam bagged 2,54,056 votes.
Pune, which is regarded as the state's cultural capital and the 'Oxford of the East', was represented by tainted veteran Congress leader Suresh Kalmadi thrice (2004, 2009 and 1996).
The BJP dropped its sitting MP Anil Shirole and nominated state Minister Girish Bapat, who is being challenged by state Congress General Secretary Mohan Joshi.
According to reports, BJP had earlier considered fielding Bollywood actor Madhuri Dixit-Nene from the Pune Lok Sabha constituency in the 2019 general elections.
Pune Lok Sabha constituency has 18,35,836 voters, including 9,49,567 men and 8,86,269 women.
In Pune Lok Sabha segment, around 49.84 per cent voter turnout has been recorded against 54.14 per cent in the last polls.
Pune Lok Sabha constituency consists of Vadgaon Sheri, Shivajinagar, Kothrud, Parvati, Pune Cantonment (SC) and Kasba Peth Assembly segments.
