Poonam Mahajan, daughter of late Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) politician, Pramod Mahajan, emerged victorious in 2014 Lok Sabha polls, defeating Congress's Priya Dutt, daughter veteran actor and parliamentarian Sunil Dutt, with a margin of 1,86,771 votes.
From the Mumbai North-Central constituency, Ms Mahajan secured 4,78,535 votes while Ms Dutt, the runner up, got 2,91,764 votes in the 2014 general elections.
In 2005, following the death of her father, Sunil Dutt, and despite a low voter turnout, she won her seat in the Lok Sabha by a margin of 172,043 votes over the Shiv Sena candidate.
Before this, Mumbai North-Central, one of the 48 Lok Sabha constituencies from Maharastra, had sent noted Indian politicians like Ramdas Athawale of Republican Party of India or RPI (in 1998), Manohar Joshi of Shiv Sena (in 1999), Eknath Gaikwad of Congress (in 2004) to the parliament.
Mumbai North-Central seat has six Maharashtra state assembly segments; they are: Vile Parle, Chandivali, Kurla (SC), Kalina, Vandre East, and Vandre West.
Mumbai North-Central constituency will go to polls on April 29 during the fourth phase of India elections 2019.
