In 2014 general elections, Rajan Vichare of Shiv Sena was elected from this constituency with a margin of 2,81,299 votes. The Sena candidate was polled 5,95,364 votes while his nearest rival Nationalist Congress Party (NCP)'s Sanjeev Naik bagged 3,14,065 votes.
Major boundary changes had happened in this constituency after the 2008 delimitation process of parliamentary constituencies in India. Before that Shiv Sena had won from this seat 5 times (including a by-poll).
In 2009, NCP's Sanjeev Naik was elected from this seat.
A Shiv Sena bastion, its sitting MP Rajan Vichare is contesting against the NCP's Anand P. Paranjpe, who is the son of former four-time Sena MP, the late Prakash Paranjpe.
Though elected in a bypoll in 2008 on a Sena ticket, Paranjpe lost to the NCP's Sanjeev G. Naik in the constituency with 20,73,442 voters comprising 11,42,158 males and 9,31,284 females.
The Thane Lok Sabha constituency consists of Mira Bhayandar, Kopri-Pachpakhadi, Ovala-Majiwada, Thane, Airoli and Belapur assembly segments from Maharashtra state Legislative Assembly.
Thane segment recorded 49.21 per cent polling when the constituency went to polls on April 23 during the fourth phase of general elections 2019.
