In 2014 general elections, Shiv Sena's Shrikant Shinde had defeated Nationalist Congress Party (NCP)'s Anand P. Paranjpe, a former Shiv Sena MP, in Kalyan Lok Sabha constituency, a Sena bastion. Shinde's margin of victory was 2,50,749 votes. The winner was polled 4,40,892 while his nearest rival bagged 1,90,143 votes.
Anand Paranjpe won the elections from Kalyan Lok Sabha constituency in 2009 after the general elections were held for the first time in this seat which was formed after the 2008 delimitation process of parliamentary constituencies in India.
In 2019 general elections, Shiv Sena has fielded sitting MP Shrikant Shinde, who is the son of party strongman and Maharashtra Minister Eknath Shinde.
This time NCP has fielded a veteran social worker and municipal corporator Babaji B. Patil against him (Shinde) in the constituency with a total electorate of 19,22,045 including 10,45,495 men and 8,76,551 women.
The Kalyan Lok Sabha constituency consists of Ambernath, Ulhasnagar, Kalyan East, Kalyan Rural, Mumbra-Kalwa and Dombivili assembly segments from Maharashtra state Legislative Assembly.
Kalyan, which is adjacent to Mumbai, recorded 45.28 percent polling when the constituency went to polls on April 23 during the fourth phase of general elections 2019.
