In 2014 general elections, Rahul Shewale of Shiv Sena was elected from Mumbai South-Central constituency with a margin of 1,38,180 votes. The Shiv Sena candidate secured 3,81,008 votes while his nearest rival and former Member of Parliament (MP), Eknath M. Gaikwad was polled 2,42,828 votes.
Before the 2008 delimitation, Shiv Sena held this constituency for 6 consecutive terms, out which Mohan Rawale represented the constituency for 5 times (1991 to 2004).
The Mumbai South-Central Lok Sabha constituency houses Asia's biggest slum, Dharavi, besides several affluent pockets. In 2019 general elections, Shiv Sena's Rahul Shewale, the sitting MP, is pitted against former city chief of Congress, ex-MP Eknath Gaikwad.
The constituency with some swank new business districts, mega-housing complexes and the congested slums of Dharavi, has an electorate of 14,47,885 including 7,93,801 men and 6,54,084 women.
After the 2008 delimitation of Lok Sabha constituencies in India, the Anushakti Nagar and Chembur areas have been added into the South-Central constituency.
Mumbai South Central recorded 55.23 per cent polling when the constituency went to polls on April 29 during the fourth phase of general elections 2019.
The Mumbai South-Central Lok Sabha constituency consists of Anushakti Nagar, Chembur, Dharavi, Sion Koliwala, Wadala and Mahim segments from Maharashtra State Legislative Assembly.
