Nitin Gadkari, a senior Union Cabinet minister in current government, who held Road Transport, Water Resources and Shipping portfolios in different occasions, won the Nagpur Lok Sabha constituency in 2014 general elections with a margin of 2,84,848 votes trouncing Indian National Congress (INC or Congress)'s Vilas Muttemwar, a four time Member of Parliament and former minister of state (independent charge) in first UPA government.
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)'s Nitin Gadkari was polled 5,87,767 while runner-up from the Congress party netted 3,02,919 votes.
Vilas Muttemwar had won the constituency four times before and after the 2008 delimitation. He emerged victorious from this constituency in years 1998, 1999, 2004 and 2009.
A traditional Congress fortress, Nagpur had gone to non-Congress parties only thrice after 1971.
All India Forward Bloc won the elections here in 1971 while a turncoat from Congress won the seat on behalf of BJP in 1996.
