Hansraj Ahir, the incumbent of Chandrapur Lok Sabha constituency and the Minister of State Ministry of Home Affairs in Narendra Modi government, levelled his tally of winning this seat four times with Shantaram Potdukhe of Indian National Congress (INC or Congress) when he beat Sanjay Wamanrao Deotale in 2014 general elections for a margin of 2,36,269 votes. Hansraj Ahir, who contested as a BJP candidate in last Lok Sabha elections, polled 5,08,049 votes while his nearest opponent from Congress, Sanjay Wamanrao Deotale, garnered 2,71,780 votes.
Shantaram Potdukhe won the seat four times in 1980, 1984, 1989 and 1991, while Hansraj Ahir had won it in 2004, 1996, 2009 and 2014.
Nareshkumar Chunnalal Puglia won the seat as a Congress candidate in 1998 and 1999.
This Lok Sabha constituency consists of six Maharashtra Legislative Assembly segments - Rajura, Chandrapur (SC), Ballarpur, Warora, Wani and Arni (ST).
In Chandrapur constituency, there are 2,193 polling centres for 19.08 lakh voters, of whom male voters count to 9.86 lakh, while female voters are 9.22 lakh.
The first phase of polling in seven Lok Sabha constituencies in Maharashtra on April 11, had 116 candidates in the fray. Over 1.30 crore voters are eligible to cast their vote in the first phase. In the first phase, Wardha, Ramtek, Nagpur,Bhandara-Gondiya, Gadchiroli-Chimur, Chandrapur andYavatmal-Washim constituencies will go to polls.
