Legendary singer Asha Bhosle, who died on Sunday at Mumbai's Breach Candy Hospital, was cremated with full state honours today. She was 92.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis attended Asha Bhosle's funeral, along with Deputy Chief Ministers Eknath Shinde and Sunetra Pawar, at the Shivaji Park.

Bollywood celebrities, including Aamir Khan, Vicky Kaushal, Vivek Oberoi, Shaan, Sudesh Bhosale, Durga Jasraj, Anu Malik, and Jatin Pandit, attended Asha Bhosle's last rites.

Several film stars such as Tabu, Ranveer Singh, Helen, and Asha Parekh paid their final respects to the legendary singer at her residence in Lower Parel.

What 'Full State Honours' Means

In India, a public personality who has made significant contributions to the country may, at the discretion of the Centre or the state government, be cremated with full state honours.

As part of the official protocol for such a cremation, the body is often draped in the National Flag as it is brought out for homage, and the flag is handed over to the family just before the last rites.

A police or military contingent usually performs a gun salute -- 21 guns in some cases, depending on the status of the personality. Dignitaries such as the Chief Minister and other ministers attend the funeral on behalf of the government.

For Javed Akhtar and Shabana Azmi, Asha Bhosle's death is not just the loss of a colleague but of a close friend and great storyteller.

During COVID-19, Akhtar and Azmi were staying in Khandala, while Bhosle was a short distance away in Lonavala with her family.

“In Khandala, I discovered one thing: No matter how much you praise her singing, she won’t be as happy with it, but if you tell her the food is very good—that the 'kebab' or 'dal' is 'kamal ke bane hai'—then Asha ji would be most happy. It gave her the ultimate happiness," Akhtar told PTI in an interview.

The lyricist said Bhosle was a great cook, and they would often visit her place for food, or she would come to their house.

"I've eaten 'puran poli,' but she was proud of her kebabs. She cooked them herself, and she cooked very well—you don’t get that taste anywhere else," Akhtar told PTI.
