The mammogram advice - which women have been gleaning for years from pamphlets in doctors' offices, fashion magazines and the tags of pink kitchen appliances sold to raise cancer research money - has been turned on its head with the announcement by the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force that women without unusual cancer risks should not begin regular screening for breast cancer until age 50.

The alleged fraud involving Jharkhand Chief Minister Madhu Koda is the latest corruption scandal to beset India, where campaign group Transparency International says the situation has been worsening. Last year India slipped in Transparency International's corruption index to 85th from 72nd in a list of 180 countries.

Mamata Banerjee's victory in Bengal seems to be turning the tide in favour of early polls. After Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee, it's now Home Minister P Chidambaram's turn to declare that the Left has lost its popularity in the state. In an interview to a national daily, the home minister has said "Mamata is articulating her party's point of view, and that appears to have found resonance across Bengal. It is for the ruling party to respond to that call."

A cyclonic storm, which is being called Phyan by the Met office, has developed over the Arabian Sea off the north Maharashtra and south Gujarat coasts. The cyclone will cause heavy rains in Mumbai as inland Maharashtra. Met department has advised people in low-lying areas to vacate.
