After stampede, no platform tickets at Delhi railway station
NDTV Correspondent, Monday May 17, 2010, New Delhi
Stampedegridstory216.jpgPeople coming to New Delhi Railway Station to see off their loved ones will not be able to enter platforms from today, as the Railways have decided to stop the sale of platform tickets to control the crowds inside. (Read: Delhi stampede: No lessons learnt?)

All this after the stampede at the New Delhi Railway Station on Sunday, where two passengers were killed and eight critically injured. (Read: 2 killed, 8 injured in Stampede at New Delhi Railway Station)

The tragedy happened when a last-minute change for two Bihar-bound trains was announced.

The Railways is also thinking of shifting more east-bound trains from the New Delhi station to the newly-constructed Anand Vihar Terminal to ease the summer rush. Trains going to eastern states like West Bengal, Bihar, Orissa, Jharkhand may be shifted to this station.

A probe into the incident is on. (Read: Mamata orders inquiry into Delhi station stampede)

"The railway ministry has to see what went wrong? The announcements were wrong, why did the trains change? It shouldn't be allowed to take place in future," commented Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit on the incident.

Horrible decision by railway minister. Very illogical.

I think this is the very bad decision made by the Railway Authority. They are not something like the airports have. Poople with old age or kids who are travelling who are there to accompany them and help them to board the train. It is a mistake from Railway and they are punishing us. When they are changing the platforms they should also be aware that passenger needs time to move from one platform to other. So it could have announced that the train will remain stand in the platform for 60 mins or till all the passengers board the train. The other thing, do not issue extra tickets for the unreserved also. Unreserved bogi has 90 seats but railway authorities will issue 300 tickets for each bogi. Everyone looks for a place to sit so they will hurry. Even the unreserved seats the coolie will not allow to sit any passengers. Passengers needs to pay the coolie to get the sit. If railways are not able to see this and they simply say that we will stop issuing platform tickets. Thats means you do the mistake and we suffer for your mistake. First rectify your system, your process then try to implement things. Right now you do NOT have any facilities which can stop giving the platform tickets. I am asking to prove first ON WHAT BASIS OR REASON YOU PUBLISHED THIS ORDER?
