EU nations call for Sri Lanka war crimes probe
Associated Press, Tuesday May 19, 2009, Brussels

European Union nations called on Monday for an independent war crimes investigation into the killing of civilians in Sri Lanka.

Czech Foreign Minister Jan Kohout, who chaired EU foreign ministers talks, said the EU wanted alleged violations of international humanitarian and human rights laws investigated.

It remained unclear who the EU wanted to carry out such a probe. Kohout suggested "national authorities" in Sri Lanka, but also mentioned UN officials.

"Those accountable must be brought to justice," the ministers said in a statement.

British Foreign Secretary David Miliband said there have been "very grave allegations" of war crimes on both sides of the conflict and "they should be properly investigated".

But others said the priority should be on getting humanitarian aid to civilians caught in the crossfire.

"Now we face an extremely difficult humanitarian situation," said EU External Relations Commissioner Benita Ferrero-Waldner. "What we are asking is that the United Nations has access to these civilians."

She said the European Commission stood ready to provide extra aid. It gave euro 3 million (USD 4 million) in emergency funding for the International Red Cross in April.

Jai Maa Kali! A letter to the Sri Lanka President and Government Dear Sir, Despite my initial misgivings about you, I was happy when you won the war, if for no other reason than peace could finally prevail. It was not my ideal solution, which would have been political, but this had to end sometime. When you gave stirring speeches following your %u2018victory%u2019 in which you promised to take care of all peoples of Sri Lanka, I quite believed you may have something to offer to this country. So imagine my horror when I came to know, from very reliable sources (eyewitnesses), the true state of your %u2018victory%u2019. You dear Sir, and generations to come, have stained your hands with blood and tears beyond repair. What weapons did you really use to win? Have you allowed a part of your population to become a test ground for our %u2018allies%u2019 chemical and nuclear dreams? Why are you not allowing the media and Aid Groups at large into those camps, now the war is over? What are you afraid they will see? Let me paint a few scenarios that may be too much, even for your hardy stomach to bear. Thousands of pregnant mothers, maimed, widowed and without even a drop of water to drink. Skin literally peeling off thousands upon thousands of infants and children whose tender limbs have been exposed to those poisonous fumes. Hundreds of people cramped into tiny shelters %u2013 many wounded and sick. And you continue to keep them that way, possibly until the worst of those hundreds of thousands die off, so the world won%u2019t know the truth. Know, dear sir, the world may or may not come to know at large, but you can never hide this from your own conscience. All your power cannot stall death, nor can you stop the wheel of karma. What I don%u2019t understand is, how you have the heart to hold tamashas and celebrations in the city, knowing all this sin is upon your shoulders (and the shoulders of your brothers). I%u2019m equally disappointed in the so-called %u201CBuddhists%u201D of our island nation. Granted, many don%u2019t know the extent of the ugliness and harsh reality behind this %u201Cbig win%u201D, but they do know at least that many fellow humans are in shreds, emotionally and physically, in a part of their own country. What pray, do they have to celebrate so much? Death? Torture? Tears? Perhaps the Christians were right to try to convert these people, for they certainly have nothing Buddhist about them. Even Heathen is too soft a term %u2013 for heathens too have compassion. Know this Sir, if you don%u2019t awaken from your drunken stupor at least at this juncture and help those people, your fate will be a trillion times worse than the worst of them. Yes, you can silence all the journalists and anyone who rises against you, but you cannot play with Divine Justice. To the Cosmic Mother, all children are one and all lives are infinitely precious. Yours truly, The Cosmic Mother

CONGRATULATIONS to the Sri Lankan Government. It was the political and National will of Sri Lanka which brought the end to the 3 decade old terrorism menace. The Sri Lankan govt. had no option but to opt for the military solution as countless peace talks and ceasefires had no desired effect and at the same time the whole of Sri Lanka was held hostage in their own land AND thus the casualties, both Civilain & Military. All the Western Countries ever did was to some how prolong this menace by talking peace when the only way known to them for resolving their a terror threat perception is WAR. More over its the ego of the western nations that has been hurt as they were not consulted nor were asked permission by the Sri Lankan Govt. for the Military action, The Western governments have so much taken for granted
