IIT professors to go on protest fast
Monideepa Banerjie, Monday September 21, 2009, Kolkata

Teachers at India's premier engineering colleges, the IITs, will go on a one-day hunger strike on September 24. They will continue to teach through that day, but on fast.

This extreme measure has been taken to press for their demands for a pay hike and greater flexibility in promotions. The professors will send a memorandum to the ministry of Human Resources Development on Tuesday setting a deadline of October 1.

For four hours they debated their demands and a possible plan of action. At the end of it, representatives of India's seven IITs, who met in Kolkata on Monday, announced the most drastic action so far in their pursuit of demands for better pay and promotion processes.

The teachers of the seven IITs have basically three demands:

  • Flexible cadre structure and no quantitative restrictions on any post.
  • Better pay packet for entry positions so that the best talent can be attracted.
  • An institute-wide performance related incentive scheme.

These demands will be placed in a memorandum to be sent to Kapil Sibal on Tuesday, calling for a meeting between the minister, the IIT directors and faculty.

The IIT teachers have set a deadline for the minister's response, the deadline of October 1. If their demands are not met by then, the confrontation between them and the government can only get worse. Waiting on the wings, the IIMs who may just follow suit.

Pay fixation for IIT faculties ran into troubled water since 1996 when Govt. when they were equated as like normal college teachers under UGC. IITs, IISc and IIMs earned the status of excellent educational facilities in the world because of the hard work put up by their faculties to achieve it. A sustained effort is been made by Govt. to releate these institutions to ordinary class by denying the role played by these faculties and by introducing quota system both in admissions of students as well as recruitment of faculties without caring for excellence. Of late Govt. is planning to invite foreign institutes to set up their campuses in India without such restrictions. This may be a ploy to invive degenerations in these institutes so that foreign players do get benefits. Our politicians along with beaurocrats in the ministry are actively playing these roles. So long IIT faculties have done excellent job in developing higher education system comparable with most developed nations, but without any recognition by our own people in the helm of affairs. Everytime their salaries are not declared along with pay commission with an understanding that their pay packages will be fixed seperately. In most of the times their pay packages fixation takes about three to five years time after other employees gets the benefits. Why Govt. is so lathergic or allergic to these group? It is better to recognise their demands whole heartedly and encourage them to achieve more in the feild so that instead of allowing foreign institutions in our country it is better if foreign students come to our institutes for higher studies.
