NDTV Correspondent, Sunday January 31, 2010, Mumbai

Mumabi Police is awaiting the medical reports of Nooriya Haveliwala, the 27-year-old woman currently in custody for drunken driving and killing two people on Saturday.

Nooriya was allegedly under the influence of alcohol as her car rammed into a police jeep and a bike. But the police now are waiting to ascertain if she was also under the influence of drugs. (Read & Watch: Drunk woman driver kills two)

Mumbai's battle with drunk driving

Mumbai Police has cracked down heavily on drunken driving in the last couple of years.

It has increased vigilance on roads, stopping motorists for random breathalyzer tests and meting out strong punishment for those caught driving under the influence of alcohol. Punishment includes suspension of driving licences and even jail.

This month alone, over a thousand cases of drunken driving were registered, of which close to 700 offenders were sent to jail.

Last year, over 10,000 people were jailed for drinking and driving and over 9000 driving licences were suspended.

And the year before, over 8000 people were jailed for drunken driving and almost an equal number of driving licences suspended.

Let us not go in to other ascpects. I agree with ramachandran, law should be same for both the genders. VENKAT: This lady dont dont deserve any respect and there is no need at all to respect a murderer, she should be punished. I would request you to think about the police officer's wife and 80yrs old mother.

Yeah, right. Why is Salman Khan - who also killed under the influence - loafing around in the streets of India. She should go scot free too, unless Salman is in jail.... lets not have short memories, people!
