Carbine-wielding cops to protect Raj Thackeray
Press Trust of India, Thursday December 17, 2009, Mumbai

A day after MNS chief Raj Thackeray received death threats from an organisation in Bihar, the Maharashtra government has provided him with 'Y' security cover.

"Earlier this week, Raj received a letter from an organisation in Bihar which said one of their members would kill him (Raj) as he is dividing the nation," Raj's lawyer Shayaji Nagare said.

The letter was signed by a person named Ashok Kumar Singh, who claimed to be the president of the organisation.

A complaint was lodged regarding this at the Shivaji Park police station in central Mumbai, Nagare said.

Following the threats, the government decided to give Raj 'Y' security, he said.

Raj will now be protected by two carbine-wielding policemen, police said.
