Humanitarian crisis hits war-torn Lanka
Nitin Gokhale, Monday April 27, 2009, Puutumatalan

The horror of being trapped by the LTTE is over. However, horror of another kind has only begun. The government has made it clear, it's going all out in its fight against the tigers but bigger than the military crisis, is the humanitarian tragedy that has unfolded.

There's little food or medicine. Above them is the open sky and if the refugees do find a place to rest, they are haunted by gruesome memories.

K Nadeshwari, a 67-year-old refugee, says, "There were no coconuts, milk or anything. We lived in great difficulty. We had only porridge to eat. There was constant shelling. We lived in a bunker for a month. Of that, we had to stay in the bunker for two days without coming out. We feel safe now. That is all we want. There were bodies lying around when we escaped. We were very afraid."

"I think there must be about 100,000 or maybe 50 to 60 thousand people still in there," puts forth 30-year-old K Rajani - another refugee.

This is the line which the Sri Lankan Army breached on Monday and allowed over 100 thousand civilians to stream into government controlled area.

But even those who have managed to escape, don't have immediate access to relief. Most are screened by the authorities for any LTTE links. And only then are they sent to the poorly equipped hospitals and aid centres.

The 40,000 food packets India has sent will only reach them on Tuesday. And other offers of help, like India doubling the capacity of its field hospital, the French offer of a 100 bed mobile medical facility and the UN's shipment of 10,000 tents are all yet to materialise.

While the Sri Lankan government has said their priority is rescuing civilians, it is clear that until the LTTE is completely flushed out aid to refugees will be restricted.

These people will never be allowed to live in peace. Now they will be again tortured for screaning for LTTE links. This is just a military victory. If these people are not given a peaceful life terrorism will soon be restored in Srilanka.

This Situation is the making of the Sri lankan government . A meaningless war unleashed on the Tamil civilians who were living peacefully in their homelands where law and order was in force and people lived happily The aim was to kill all the Tamils and grab the lands of the Tamils and declare the whole of the island as the land of sinhala. That s what the Buddhist monks want The Sri Lankan government did not plan for the evacuation of Tamils by land or sea when they set out on this war. They did not invite the international humanitarian organisation to be ready to receive the fleeing civilians to be accommodated and fed. They did not set up make shift hospitals. They did not send food, medicine or doctors to the safe zone. They did not allow the free media to visit the area. They refused entry for the humanitarian organisation free media into the so called safe zone. When a reporter asked when will the civilinain concentration camp would return to their villages , the reply came quickly saying that mines have to be cleared from the areas. There is no land mines. People lived in the vanni area before they fled. Only two months ago people from Kilinochchi and adjoining areas fled to Mullaithevu. It was thorough Kilinochchi and through the land routes the civilians fled to safety and the army followed through these areas and cornered the Tamils to the coastal area. The army blocked the land and sea route for civilians to flee and the government was blaming on the LTTE holding them . How could a 500 - 1000 cadets hold back 3000.0000 civilians. . The above is not the actions of a country that values protection of its citizens Whom are they bluffing that mines in these areas have cleared. Are they planting mining to prevent the civilians returning. The people should have been allowed to return to their villages immediately. Already they have been traumatised and the conditions in the camps are appalling. Have every one lost their commonsense or the world is sinking to its lowest level. If the countries are headed by selfish, self serving, unethical brutes, what could one expect. The days of noble politicians are no longer in power
