China bans mosque prayers in riot-hit area

China has ordered mosques in its city of Urumqi to stay closed for Friday prayers.

The order comes after several days of ethnic violence between Uighur Muslims and Han Chinese. At least 156 people have been killed so far.

Thousands of troops remain in Urumqi, the capital of Xinjiang province, to try to maintain law and order. Unofficial sources say people in Xinjiang have been told to "stay at home and pray", rather than gathering in mosques.

On Thursday, China said it had "a great deal of evidence" that the violence had Al-Qaida links.

The ethnic crisis in China even compelled country's president Hu Jintao to cut short his visit to the G8 summit in Italy.

I wish one day India will also have a leader who will shed his fear to lose election for once[may be]but create an atmosphere that terrorist will fear to hide in such places and can be flased out without resistance from any particular community. regards

Very sorry for Mr. Avinash, Do you still believe the terrorism is from mosques? If you go to the origin of this choas you will realise that it was a outcome of a rumour. We muslims believe that the terrorism around the world is nothing to do with Islam. Believe me we are very much open to all of you. Please do not show us this hatred infact we are also human beings. Thanks
