Press Trust of India, Saturday December 5, 2009, New Delhi

Two labourers sleeping on a footpath were injured in Delhi, early on Saturday when a 24-year-old engineer, who was allegedly under the influence of alcohol, lost control of his Mercedes and rammed into them.

Simran Sodhi, who was driving the car, was arrested and charged under sections 279 (rash and negligent driving) and 337 (causing hurt), Deputy Commissioner of Police H G S Dhaliwal said.

Sodhi was returning home with a female friend from Hotel Ashoka's F-Bar when the incident took place near Sarojini Nagar in south Delhi at around 2 am.

"He was under the influence of alcohol. He lost control of the vehicle which came on the footpath. The car hit two labourers who sleeping on the pavement," Dhaliwal said.

The injured labourers were rushed to AIIMS where doctors said they were in a stable condition.

A senior police official said Sodhi is US educated and a medical test has confirmed that he was under the influence of alcohol.

The woman who was in the car was let off after questioning, he said, adding three more labourers were sleeping on the same pavement but escaped unhurt.

"We are recorded their statements. Further investigations are on," he said.

I feel very sad and frustrated, when everytime someone die at the footpath. Dont know about others but I can see the anger, helplessness and above all wanting just a bit of respect as a human in that labourer's eyes. One question for that US educated engineer. Have you ever drove a car drunk while in US?

In any country, he would have been just fined. But the failure of the government to not prevent people from sleeping on footpaths has been transferred to a driver , who has every chance of losing control. The driver is not a criminal, but a normal man who had an accident, but in India he has become a criminal because people who should be living in proper homes 'live on footh paths'.
