Media and self-regulation
Wednesday April 8, 2009 , India

For all you media bashers out there, here's one bit of good news. This week, every TV channel in the News Broadcasters Association agreed not to telecast any visuals of a lewd MMS, which showed a young college girl stripping for her boyfriend. The boy..who should be publicly whipped, in my personal opinion....accessed her email and sent this mms to all her contacts. The visuals have been printed in some newspapers, but TV channels have stayed away from it, a hugely positive sign and an indication that self regulation is the most effective way ahead.

NDTV has often found itself the odd one out, for instance we're the only ones who didn't show footage of the infamous Carol Gracias wardrobe malfunction or the DPS schoolgirl MMS, both now immortalised in popular films like Fashion and DevD. So, a united stand on what is acceptable TV content, is something for all of us to celebrate.

My HERO of the week: Somnath Chatterjee. The Speaker often reminds me of an irate family patriarch, someone who provides a sense of propriety in a Parliament full of MPs, often determined to show how they can redefine the concept of ' Honourable'. When he runs out of patience, he mirrors the opinion of most voters, who wonder why we pay taxes for this daily tamasha.

My ZERO of the week: the Mangalore Mayor who filed a case against Renuka Choudhary for saying the city had been ' TALIBANISED'. Next, a court order to file a FIR against her. This, as the men behind the Mangalore pub attack still roam free. Unbelievable!

Heartning to know..infact too nice...that media as a community is realising and introspecting...the negative aspects of some of its endavours, and hope the self imposed measure(s)and the collective resolution(s) made under the aegeis of broadcasters asso is respected....but still got to go a long way....very long...i think its the irony of our times, wherein we have caught on and infact marched ahead of west in so many feilds...on one hand...but on other...we as people......are walking backwards at a fast pace in degenerative mode as far as social values, ehtics, morality beahvorial norms go...we are copying at fast pace, alas!, the worst from the west!, and infact, enriching it to a great extent. ONE WUD be happy if MEDIA could look inwards..introspect in totality with refrence to its reach and impact... ON SO MANY ISSUES

I am really relieved that at last media has now sensitised towards these issues. In the past some media channels aggreviate the pain of the victim and his family memebers rather than lending a helping hand to them . I must admit NDTV has been bit diffrent in their approach towards delivering the news rather than glamourising it.

The Media has become a parrallel centre of power. The Indian democracy is lucky to have the Institute like NDTV. But media is not required to report that has happened but should also care about bigger objectives related to what should happen. For example we have various system like LIC OF INDIA, ESIC AND NEW PENSION SCHEME MONETERING AUTHORITIES etc.We need the medical facilities nad social security system to flourish by leaps and bounds. We are more than billion. We require such services for efficiency and well beings. These services are not adequate and media can help the masses and also create a reputation for themselves by forcing government agencies to accelrate development efforts. I am not aware of any consistent efforts by the media to report such deficiencies which is the need of the hour.Media ashould also look into the future and not linger with the past.It is essential to live long in the history of Indian growth

I appreciate and welcome this stand of TV Media. This should be a must follow example in future also. I agree with your comment that NDTV do practice Responsible Journalism when compared to many other news channels. keep it up.

TV telecaste such news to increase their TRP , they are least bothered by about the impact of such news in society and personal life . Basically TV channals are runned by Businessmans/Propriters not by the Social Workers and Editors. In every clippings, they weighs Pros and Cons to their intrest. There is no doubt that such steps are being taken by Channels, are a welcomed, but its implementation is doubtful, will the small channels can stop themselves from such NEWS.

NDTV and all other TV channels have taken a positive step with this decision. Indian Media is still very much at infant stage and it will take us some time to reach the level of respect that some international broadcasters such as BBC have earned. Yet, the most important thing to take away from this is the willingness the separate 'commercial profits' from 'journalistic integrity'. The media especially the news broadcasters have to start moving away from TRP rating inspired Bhoot stories to more informative journalism. The last thing India needs is FOX NEWS.
