As the Sri Lankan offensive on the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) reaches its final stages, the Tamil Tigers have announced unilateral ceasefire. However, the Lankan government has been quick in rejecting the ceasefire call.

The LTTE has said that it announced the ceasefire in the face of an "unprecedented humanitarian crisis" and in response to the calls made by the UN, EU, US, India and other countries.

"In the face of an unprecedented humanitarian crisis and in response to the calls made by the UN, EU, the governments of India and others, the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) has announced a unilateral ceasefire," LTTE said in a statement.

However, the Sri Lankan government, rejecting the call, has told NDTV that they are close to defeating the Tamil Tigers and that they must surrender. The government has told NDTV that the anti-LTTE operations will continue.

"Declaring the ceasefire is a joke. The LTTE has no capability to mount offensive," said Lanka Foreign Secretary, speaking to NDTV.

"That is a joke. They were not fighting with us, they were running from us. There is no need of a ceasefire. They must surrender. That is it," Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa told NDTV in a telephone interview.

"We don't think Prabhakaran will escape. The LTTE offer can't be taken seriously. It is a LTTE strategy to deceive," he added.

Meanwhile, speaking to NDTV, Lanka Army spokesperson has said that there priority at this moment is to rescue civilians, adding that they would capture Prabhakaran soon.

If India is considered to be a super power in South Asia, it should have influenced Srilanka not to have started this war. Current killings could have been prevented, if only India sincerly involved in the peace process, that was initiated by Norway. India aspire to get a seat in UN security council, should have played its card well to stop the killings, then it would have demonsrated to the world that it has ability to resolve the crisis that would directly affect itself, Tamilnadu. The way srilankan tamils are treated and killed, it affects tamilnadu people and many would feel that they are being alienated. Except people from Tamilnadu, most of the indians either ignorant or not interested to know the origin of srilankan tamils struggle and their problems. Some people equate their struggle with JKLF. Indian constitution does not prevent any indian becoming PM, be it a kashmiri, northern, southern or eastern indians. In front of constiution, everyone is equal. But, in srilanka, their constitution says, only a sinhalese can become PM and tamils can not. After independence, if only srilanka had a federation system that is similar to india, srilankan tamil struggle would not have born at all. All those who are fighting for tamils cause now, either they whould have been working peacefully or would have become some entrepreneur, there by lifting srilankas economy , and by this time, srilanka would have become one of the emerging economy in south asia and tamils and singhalese would be living peacefully together. Another anology to compare India and srilanka, for arugument sake, let us say if india declared that india is no longer a secular state and it is hindu state and only an hindu person can become a PM, What will happen ? All the other relegions will start to struggle and oppose, will not rest until the constitution gets amended equality. But what happened in srilanka ? After independence, the country was a secular state, but later, they declared the country as a buddhist state and amended the constitution that only a buddhist can become a PM, another inequality. These examples are only a few. There are more inequalities, this space is not enough to write all. We as a indian have all equalities per constitution , irrespective of regional, language or religion differences. In the same way, why not srilankan tamils ? Before British brought srilanka under their rule, Jaffna was ruled by a tamil king and the document signed by the last tamil king with British is still available in London museum. Raja Raja Cholan and Rajendra Choaln ruled northern srilanka during 985 AD, that was history. Why I am writing this, Indian brothers should not think that srilankan tamils were immigrants during British. They have a long standing history and they had their own kingdom before British came to srilanka. So, they should have equal rights, diginified life as do singahalese. But, the truth is until now, it is denied by singhalese.

This is in response to posts by 'Narasimhan' and 'None'. It is a fact that the Tamil speaking people of Sri Lanka were discriminated against. In India, we too have many examples of discrimination. For instance, in Tamilnadu, there is a discrimination against Brahmins (in terms of Govt jobs, education seats, etc). If the Brahmin population were rise up in arms, become militant and demand for a Brahmin Eelam in Tamil Nadu, would the Tamilnadu govt agree? We have to be realistic. The Tamil population of Sri lanka have to adopt the political process. They will succeed in the end...
