Union Home Minister P Chidambaram may have said Operation Greenhunt is an invention of the media, but for people living in the shadows of Maoist territory, fear has become a very real, eternal companion. Karimnagar district of Andhra Pradesh shares the border with Naxal-affected districts of Chhattisgarh and Maharashtra. Residents of Ambatpally scatter and disappear as soon as they spot any car entering their village, thinking it to be a police vehicle. “Questions will be asked why we are hanging around as a group,'' says Suresh, a villager. The laughter barely hides the underlying fear. This area in Karimnagar district was a hardcore Naxal land till 2005 when a police offensive pushed the Naxals out.

Naxals attack train in Jharkhand, 2 killed

Restoration work is on in full swing on the tracks damaged by the Maoist attack on a running passenger train on the Orissa-Jharkhand border on Thursday night that left two persons dead and 55 injured. Eight bogies of the Tata-Bilaspur passenger train derailed after Maoists blew up railway tracks between Manoharpur and Posoita railway stations in Jharkhand's West Singhbhum district.

Border Security Force foils Naxal attack

Border Security Force (BSF) jawans foiled a Maoist attack on their camp at Khudishar village in Giridih district, police said on Monday. About 20 Maoists started firing from a vantage point at the BSF's make-shift camp on Sunday night, but a strong retaliatory action from the personnel forced the Naxals to retreat, district Superintendent of Police Ravikant Dhan said.

Jharkhand: Maoists release MLA

The RJD MLA kidnapped by Maoists in Jharkhand has been released, according to the police. Ram Chandra Singh and a supporter were kidnapped from his constituency Manika as they were returning on a motorcycle after attending a function. Singh has got a ticket to contest again in the coming Assembly elections. Jharkhand is one of the worst affected Naxal states which is why polling is being held in five phases for the 81 Assembly seats starting on November 27.
