Schoolgirl paraded naked for not paying fee
Tanima Biswas, Saturday August 29, 2009, Faridabad

Angry parents of a Class III student, studying at the Faridabad Model School, staged protest outside the premises. They were fuming over the stripping of the girl by her teacher in class, allegedly for not paying fees.

The nine-year-old says her desperate appeal had no impact on the lady teacher.

"When I asked why she was doing it, she said it was the principal's order," the girl says.

The family claims they are exempted from paying fees under the economically deprived quota as the girl's father is an auto-rickshaw driver. Her mother, who's a member of the parents association, alleges harassment by the school authorities.

"I have an order from the education department which exempts us from paying fees. We are very poor," she says.

But the school principal Shashi Malik says wasn't aware of the incident.

"If there was any such incident, parents should have told me. But no one came. If this is true we will take strong action against the teacher," Malik says.

But the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights is outraged.

"We are looking into the matter. It seems to be a case of child rights violation," says one of its members Sandhya Bajaj.

Police have registered a case and the teacher has been detained for questioning.

Such a teacher is a shame on the society and the noble teaching profession, she should be punished considerably in order to prevent such situations from happening. The child will have a mental impact for her entire life.

being a teacher in Africa, I find this incident of torturing a 9 year old child as a violation of children's right to be at school for education. I find the statement of the Headmistress as an unbelievable and fabricated story. Fee collection is not the responsibility of a teacher and if s/he tortured a child, the headmaster must have known what is happening and should take the responsibility together with this 'so called teacher'. What I don't understand is the discretion and integrity of this teacher. This teacher should leave the teaching career for blindly following (as she claims) the instruction of HM and obviously we might need to rip these teacher and HM in public. The Ministry of Education should make sure that such incidents will not occur in future. The children should be taught to say NO to any wrong doing on them, by parents as well as by teachers. Such child abuse must be stopped. Ajay; agnarayanan@gmail.com
