How Sonam And Raja Raghuvanshi Met

The first contact between Sonam and Raja was made through a traditional matrimonial directory - the Samaj Parichay Pustika - on October 1, 2024. As part of a Ram Navami ritual, names of eligible boys and girls from the community are published in the booklet to help families arrange matches.

Sonam's father enrolled her name. Raja's family did the same. There was no prior acquaintance - only a profile that seemed right. They met, liked what they saw, and agreed to marry.

Raja's mother, Uma Raghuvanshi, described it as a perfectly arranged match - no love affair, no hidden motives.

But something darker was quietly taking shape.

Sonam Raghuvanshi: Business-Driven Or Calculated Manipulator?

Sonam, the daughter of plywood factory owner Devi Singh Raghuvanshi, lived in Kushwah Nagar, Indore. She ran nearly every department of the family business - billing, accounts, supervision. Years ago, a man named Raj Kushwaha worked in the billing department of Sonam's father's factory. He also lived near Sonam's home. That same man - now at the center of a police investigation - is believed to have re-entered her life and become her alleged accomplice. Police now call him the co-mastermind.

Was Raj simply a former employee or something far more sinister?

Raja Raghuvanshi: The Youngest Son Of A Respected Transport Family

Raja Raghuvanshi was the youngest of three brothers in a tightly knit joint family in Sahkar Nagar, Indore. His two elder brothers, Sachin and Vipin, were married. Raja had taken charge of the family business - "Raghuvanshi Transport" - providing buses on rent to schools and coaching institutes since 2007. By all accounts, Raja was diligent, responsible, and ready for a new chapter in life: marriage.

Last month, on May 11, he married Sonam Raghuvanshi in a traditional ceremony. Twelve days later, he was dead, brutally assaulted, his lifeless body abandoned in the dense wilderness of Meghalaya.

A Wedding, A Honeymoon, And Then Silence

Sonam And Raja Raghuvanshi got married on May 11. By May 20, the newlyweds had left for a honeymoon in Meghalaya. What returned was only a body. On June 2, Raja was found dead in a gorge. His head bore injuries from a sharp weapon, believed to be a machete; his phone was switched off, and no call records were leading to his last moments. Sonam - missing.

Investigators believe the murder was premeditated.

Was the marriage a front?

Was there a secret network involved?

"Saat Janmon Ka Saath": Sonam Posted From Husband Raja's Account After Murder

Soon after her husband was killed and thrown into a gorge in front of her eyes, Sonam Raghuvanshi - prime accused in the murder case - posted from Raja Raghuvanshi's phone: "Saat janmon ka saath hai (Together for seven lives)".

The ironic message, right after the gruesome murder, was posted in an attempt to portray the husband was still alive.

According to the sources, Raja was killed on May 23, the same day the couple were reported to be missing. The post was made at 2:15 pm, the sources said.

"Sonam Could Have Eloped, Why Kill Him": Raja Raghuvanshi's Sister

The sister of Indore businessman Raja Raghuvanshi, who was allegedly murdered by his wife, Sonam, and her lover, Raj Singh Kushwaha, in Meghalaya, has slammed her sister-in-law, saying she could have "eloped if she liked someone else".

A Crime For Friendship? The 3 'Contract Killers' Who Murdered Indore Man

The sinister murder plan of Raja Raghuvanshi, an Indore-based businessman during his honeymoon, was allegedly hatched by his wife and her lover - who hired three 'contract killers'. Now, a new twist in the case suggests that the three killers are not really assassins but the lover, Raj Kushwaha's friends.

The three accused have been identified as - Anand Kumri, Akash Rajput, and Vicky Thakur. All of them are residents of Madhya Pradesh, officials said. Anand Kumri (23) was arrested from Uttar Pradesh's Bina district.

The Unmissable Clues In Sonam Raghuvanshi's Last Phone Call With Raja's Mother

Sonam Raghuvanshi last spoke to her in-laws while trekking to a steep peak to get a glimpse of a waterfall in the lush mountains of Meghalaya. The picturesque hills offered breathtaking views, she argued when her mother-in-law questioned the need for undertaking such a steep hike.

It appeared to be a normal conversation between a caring mother and her child, except for the possible clues that it threw up on Raja's murder during their honeymoon, for which she is the prime suspect.

Raja's mother, Uma Raghuvanshi, likely made the phone call before the couple went missing on May 23. In an unverified audio clip of the phone call, she was first heard enquiring if her son's phone had started working, indicating she had been trying to reach him, but couldn't.

Sonam answered negatively.

"We are climbing. We will call once we reach," she replied, though it's not known if that promised call was ever made.

Towards the end of the phone call, his mother seemed relieved to be able to reach her daughter-in-law. However, with Raja not speaking to his mother during the call, it is not known if he had been killed by that time. How this last phone call fits in with the police version of events will be significant in answering the questions that remain.

Raj's Sister Urge Checking Office Records To Verify Where He Was During Murder

Raj Kushwaha's sister also said her brother is innocent and cannot commit murder. She also claimed that Raj was in the city, not Shillong. Raj's little sister urged checking the office records to verify he was here.

"Vicky and Raj are both my brothers. They can never do something like this. My brother Raj did not go anywhere. You can ask the people at his office," she said.

With folded hands, Raj's sister pleaded her brother be saved. "My only demand is that my brother should be released. He is being falsely accused. My brother is innocent."

"My Son And Sonam Worked Together": Honeymoon Murder "Mastermind's" Mother

Raj Kushwaha, alleged lover of Sonam Raghuvanshi and a co-accused in Indore man Raja Raghuvanshi's murder case, is innocent and is being falsely accused, claimed his mother in an interview.

Speaking to the news agency ANI, Raj's mother said, "My son can never do something like this. He is just 20... He is my only son... He used to work at Sonam's brother's factory. She also used to work there and both would interact. He is being falsely accused."

Sharing an example of what she said is her son's innocence and kindness, the woman narrated an incident and said, "My son would give away his footwear if he saw someone walking barefoot. I would scold him. I would tell him I won't give you food, but he would still donate."

Raj's mother requested that her son be proven innocent.

"I request the government to prove him innocent. He is innocent," she said while sobbing.

Sonam allegedly killed her husband in connivance with her boyfriend, Raj Kushwaha, who hired contract killers.

Though Vipin had not met Raj, the alleged boyfriend, he had heard of him, and not in any flattering context. Sonam, he said, would always berate him for being a poor worker. Unless Sonam confesses, "we will have the doubt that she is being framed... So, we want to hear from her," he told NDTV in an exclusive interview.

On Monday night, at around 1 am, Sonam approached Sahil Yadav and asked for help. "She asked for a mobile phone. When I asked what happened, she said her phone had been stolen, and it was urgent. She gave me a number, and I called for her. She spoke to her family," Mr Yadav told the news agency IANS.

Mr Yadav claims he spoke to the family since Sonam was crying and could barely talk properly. Upon the family's request, he informed the nearest police station. Later, when Mr Yadav tried intervening and asked Sonam what had happened, she revealed that her husband had been killed.

"After a while, I went and asked her what had happened. She said that in May, she got married. "On behalf of the entire state and people of Meghalaya, I request everyone in the country to believe that Meghalaya is a safe place for tourists. Please come. A statement from a tourist guide - possibly the last person to see Raja Raghuvanshi alive - alerted police to the possibility that three other men were involved in a grisly murder case filled with plot twists worthy of a Bollywood 'masala' movie, including hitmen, a love affair, and a bloody machete.

At 10 am on May 23, Raja and his wife Sonam, from Indore in Madhya Pradesh, were spotted in Meghalaya's Mawlakhiat. That was the last time Raja was seen alive.

They were seen by Albert Pde, a local who had helped guide them a day earlier through a three-hour trek to Nongriat to visit the 'living roots' bridge. He told local police he saw Raja and Sonam with three other men, none of whom were locals, he believed, because all three conversed in Hindi.

Sources said this helped the cops expand search parameters.

Who these men are is unclear at this time, but three male suspects - Vicky, Akash, and Anand - have been arrested in connection with Raja's murder. Police believe these were the hitmen.

Speaking to PTI, Lyngdoh said efforts were made to dent the image of Meghalaya, which is a safe destination for tourists.

"The state government has directed the police to register FIRs to ensure that all these perpetrators are brought to book," he said.

Raghuvanshi's murder was the first such case to happen in Sohra in years, he said.

"We congratulate the SIT, the mountaineering association, the rock climbing association, and the local people of Sohra, the media fraternity, who, despite very challenging terrain and the slush in the peak of monsoon, recovered the body of Raghuvanshi from the gorge," he added.

Lyngdoh alleged that people across the country were incited against communities from Meghalaya.
