4,500 striking doctors sacked in Maharashtra
Ketki Angre, Sunday July 12, 2009, Mumbai

Over 4,500 resident doctors across medical colleges in Maharashtra went on an indefinite strike on Tuesday, demanding an increase in their monthly stipends. The government in response has sacked all of them.

The residents have been demanding a pay hike, but talks failed.

"The government said it can increase our stipend by Rs 6000 which we think is unreasonable and unacceptable. We have not got any written assurance from the government," said Dr Asad Rehman, spokesperson, Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors.

Among other demands, the doctors also want better security at work and better housing facilities. The government wants them to return to work before their demands are considered. A promise made in the past, every time residents have struck work, clearly not promising this time. With talks at a stalemate, the government says it has alternatives in place so that patients do not suffer.

"Our public health workers and even medical professors have been pressed into service," said Dr W B Tayade, head, Directorate of Medical Education and Research.

Even as the tug-of-war between the government and doctors continue, its patients who'll have to bear the brunt.

I think that I have a right to discuss this matter, for I have taught in two medical schools in the US for many years. are for Lack of sleep, overwork, the often unjustified criticisms by their mentors, and their mentors' custom of maintaining an intelligence service on them by the informers (most of them are are nursing supervisors who do not participate in patient care)stress the residents and interns in the US. In India we have all these and few more. They cannot have emergency CT scans performed on their patient with head injury. It is impossible to have an emergency chest X ray, even if the patient has pneumonia. In Kolkata patients with myocardial infarction are transferred to the ward from the emergency room without oxygen. Can you get an emergency blood gas analysis. The mentors are either in a conference or at home when the house staff is exposed unassisted before the anxious and angry relatives. The punitive step exposes the tunnel vision and myopia of the government. Will not the same government re-instate them in future. Where else can they find slave labor?
