On Jaswant's book, it is Modi vs other BJP CMs
Rohit Bhan, Wednesday August 26, 2009, Ahmedabad

After a senior BJP leader demanded that the book on Jinnah by expelled party leader Jaswant Singh be banned across the country, only Narendra Modi's Gujarat has gone ahead and actually done that. No other BJP- ruled states have banned the book and the popular view is that if the government takes such an action it only creates a needless controversy.

On this matter, Narendra Modi is the first and the odd BJP CM out. He has banned the book, insisting its contents are ''against national interest'' and could 'disrupt public peace''

The other BJP chief ministers are reluctant to ban the book that allegedly hurts the image of party icon Sardar Patel. Karnataka chief minister, B. S. Yediyurappa, says: ''We won't ban the book in Karnataka.''

Asked about the demand to ban the book, Madhya Pradesh chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan said he did not agree.

They may not say it on camera, but off it the demurring chief ministers argue that a hasty ban will only create a needless controversy on freedom of expression. And create more interest in the book.
Analysts point out that the other CMs do not share Modi's current political compulsions. Modi's decision, they say, may well be linked to by-elections in Saurashtra, Gujarat's Patel heartland.

Jaynarayan Vyas, spokesperson of the Gujarat government, said: ''Leaders like Sardar Patel should never be made subject matter of any controversy.''

The book, meanwhile, is flying off the shelves drawing from the massive controversy around it.

Sir, It is not advisable nor desirable to denigrate any leader of the stature of Sirdar Patel particularly after such a long time since independence. In fact perhaps for the first time his name is being unnecessarily into some sort of a controversy. while we can understand the decision by all the B J P chief ministers (barring Narendra Modi)not to ban Jaswant Singh's book for their own reasons we should also understand that Narendra Modi's decision to ban the book should not come as a surprise.Being the C.M of Gujarat he should take cognisance of the popular sentiments of the state when a revered national leader from the state is slighted and what he has done is in accordance with this.Further he is being held as partly responsible for the party's electoral debacle ffor having been projected as P.M.candidate and he has to deflect this charge. The reported displeasure of Mr.Vajpayee in the aftermath of Gujarat riots also understandably put him on the defensive . FFor all these reasons he needs the total support of the party brass to avoid any adverse impact on him and his political future. As quid pro quo he has sought to please the party bosses by his loyalty displayed through the banning of Jaswant Singh's book.No prizes for guessing the reasons as it is transparent and apparent.

Banning Jaswantsingh's book by Narendra Modi and expelling Jaswantsingh from the BJP made the book as well as Mr Jinnah still more popular.Madhya Pradesh and Karnatak both refused to ban the book. What Rajnathsingh has to say on this.
