J&K: Infiltrating into militant ranks, new police strategy
NDTV Correspondent, Thursday March 11, 2010, Srinagar

In the last two months, 10 top militant commanders have been killed in the Doda and Kishtwar districts of Jammu. The police are working on a strategy to get information from their men planted within the militant circles.

Arms and ammunition were seized after a top Hizbul Mujahideen commander was killed in a recent encounter, a big catch for the Doda police.

Shaheen who was active in the area for a decade was alone when he was confronted.

For the first time, the police have admitted that their men are well entrenched in the militant groups, something that has made militant commanders jittery.

Ashok Gupta, IG Jammu: "We won over few people among militants also, they (commanders) want to remain alone, they are not sure who is there with them or who is not with them."

"Militants who are sitting across who are in communication with them, they are consistently telling them, who the person (informers) who is amongst you", he adds.

The strategy of infiltration into the militant ranks is really paying off, it has created a lot of panic among the militant leadership and it has in fact isolated the militant leadership and that's precisely the reason, why so many militant commanders are getting killed.
