The chief minister posed for cameras on the banks of Sabarmati river as his ministers and bureaucrats looked on. This is something that Modi rarely does, perhaps another makeover, taking a shot at cowboy image.

Jawans guarding Gateway forced to sleep on pavement

The pictures showed a shocking but familiar story. Jawans appointed to guard the Gateway of India sleeping at the monument they’re meant to protect after Mumbai’s 26/11 attacks. These men were not given rooms or toilets to use. Instead, they pitched tents at the Gateway, turned into squatters near the Taj Hotel. NDTV and other media reported on this story on Thursday, and instead of finding a solution, the government and local police reacted by forcing the jawans to give up their tents; they spent the night on the pavement.

With the violent land struggle sweeping the Indian heartland, landless farmers in Assam coming together is making the government uneasy. “This land is ours. We want freedom for landless farmers exploited by the capitalists.” This is an unusual land reform movement in Sadiya gathering momentum. Akhil Gogoi, who shot to fame with his RTI success stories, has started a foot march across Assam from Sadiya to Dhubri. Over the next three years his morcha, Krishak Sangram Samiti, will travel through every village in the state to mobilise support for their demands.

Govt's ad spree vs austerity

There were full-page ads in papers in every metro and in several smaller stories all wishing Indira Gandhi a Happy Birthday. The ads were placed by various government departments for the prime minister who was assassinated in 1984. The Department of Audio Visual Publicity wouldn’t reveal how much was spent on these ads. But it’s not tough to do the math.

Rahul's security: Centre writes to UP Chief Secy

Just a day before Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi’s visit to Amethi, a letter from the Centre to the Uttar Pradesh Chief Secretary complaining about lapses in Rahul Gandhi's security cover has surfaced in the capital. The letter issued on the October 27 cites two specific instances of lapses - one in Raebareli and the other in Amethi. Both instances happened this year. The center has reportedly warned the state government to adhere to security norms.

Advani to make way for Sushma?

BJP sources have told NDTV that LK Advani has hinted that he won’t complete his five-year term as the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha. He has reportedly conveyed to Sushma Swaraj that she will replace him in that post. According to sources, BJP president Rajnath Singh has also backed Sushma Swaraj as the next Leader of Opposition. Singh will step down as the chief before his term ends, and plans to assist the next chief to take charge, added the sources.
