Babbar Khalsa chief gets life for Beant assassination

Babbar Khalsa terrorist Paramjit Singh Bheora has been sentenced to life imprisonment in Chandigarh for the assassination of former Punjab Chief Minister Beant Singh.

Bheora was found guilty of planning and executing Beant Singh's murder on Monday.    

In 1995, Beant Singh was getting into his car when he was killed by a suicide bomber Dilawar Singh at the Punjab Civil Secretariat in Chandigarh. Bheora, the Chief of Operations of Babbar Khalsa, was arrested in 1997. He was among 9 men accused of planning and executing the assassination.

The trial was being conducted at a special court inside the Burail Jail in Chandiharh.  

In 2004, Bheora and two other prisoners dug a tunnel out of the Burail prison and managed to escape; Bheora and one of the other terrorists who escaped with him were caught.
