The YSR I knew
Saturday September 5, 2009

"No chance the CM would have survived if his chopper hit Rudrakonda," said a villager who was trekking along with me deep inside the Nallamalla forest to the Rudrakonda hillock, where the CM's chopper was reported to have crashlanded. Another forest official echoed his sentiment. "I hope you both don't have a black tongue," I remarked as we navigated through difficult, inhospitable terrain.

Another half hour and everyone's worst fears had come true. "The Home ministry has confirmed YSR is dead," informed my colleague from the newsdesk in Delhi. My mind went through a flurry of emotions all at once. Muddled yet clearly remembering my first, my last and several, several meetings with Dr Y S Rajasekhara Reddy.

It was sometime in 1996 that I first met YSR at his home. I did not know much about him then but I was impressed with his smart attire. An orange striped shirt and black trousers. Very unlike a regular politician, I remarked then. He smiled.

And that is what will always remain with me about YSR. His handsome smile. And his ability to laugh. In fact, just last week, he took a potshot at his favourite political rival Chandrababu Naidu in the state legislative assembly. "Why are you against people laughing? Is it just because you never laugh?"

Much before he came to power, irked by senior Congressmen from Andhra Pradesh staying put in positions of power, YSR had said politicians should retire by 60. This 8th July, when he turned 60, YSR said people wanted him for a longer innings. Which is why once he realised he had put on weight, every evening, he made it a point to sweat it out at the gym.

I have travelled with YSR on several of his election campaigns. By road through Telangana in 1999, when he was very optimistic that the people of Andhra Pradesh  would elect the Congress. The TDP-BJP arithematic did him in and post-1999, YSR was a wiser politician. He had realised the virtue of winning alliances, something he did correctly in 2004 by wooing the Left parties.

Sometime in early 2003, YSR and his trusted friend from his medical college days, KVP Ramachandra Rao, invited me and Uma for lunch one Sunday afternoon. The duo wanted to discuss YSR's plan to do a padyatra that summer and sought our views on how they could maximise the impact. It had been a bad few summers the previous years and a politician walking his way to meet people and displaying empathy was a winner of an idea. The timing had to be right, not too early, not too late. So that it would stay in the people's mind when they vote, I remember saying. "And the people of Andhra could do with a doctor's touch," I joked.

I met him during the padyatra in Nizamabad district and he insisted I too walk with him a few kilometres. He fell sick during the padyatra and needed medical help in Rajahmundry. But doctors seldom listen to other doctors. So against medical advice, Dr Rajasekhara Reddy decided he will walk the whole hog. Srikakulam, the easternmost tip of Andhra was his destination and he will reach there, he said.

The effort to reach out to the people paid dividends. Hi-tech, laptop-toting Chandrababu Naidu was seen as disconnected from the people and so he was logged out of power and YSR, at one time one of Naidu's best friends, replaced him as CM.

What helped him win a second time round in 2009 was that people perceived him as having walked the talk. He had fulfilled at least some of the promises he made, like free power to farmers, compensation for families of suicide victims, increased farm loans and loan-waiver schemes.

He knew how to connect to his people. At his meetings, he would talk of what a success the `108' emergency ambulance service has been in Andhra Pradesh. And then go on to imitate the siren. `Kwuin, kwuin, kwuin' much to the amusement of the audience. Tragic, it was the same ambulance's siren that was heard the loudest at the Kurnool parade ground when his body arrived from inside the forest.

YSR loved listening to what others thought of Jagan, his son. I had spent half a day in Pulivendula to see the cub of Kadapa campaigning. "His style of delivering speeches and voice modulation is just like you," I said to YSR over breakfast in Eluru a few days later. I could see the proud father beam.

And his repartees would always be laced with humour, a ready smile and even a happy guffaw. During the election campaign, when I asked him if he will be CM after 16th May 2009, he stopped near his chopper and mockingly asked me, "Any doubt, Sudhir?"

Always known as the Tiger of Kadapa, it was ironic that he met his end in the Nallamalla forest reserve which is also home to the Srisailam Tiger Reserve. And perhaps only apt that Kadapa should change its own name after its most famous son.

This is with respect to comment given by Kiran on Sep 08, 2009. Every one knows how he helped the poor people. He is a mahatma for the poor people. He introduced 108,104,Rs 200 pinction for the old people,Rs 500 pinction for the handicapped people, fees reimbursement for Engeneering and medicine. In villages people are getting loans from banks with 25 paise interest. Now days most of states have initiated 108 in their states. He saved lifes for a lot of people by 108.I have never seen this type of CM.

YSR is great to have achieved a feat of being Chief Minster for 5 years full in Andhra Pradesh and wining a second term too to continue. A leader is known after his death. and in his case it showed in the huge crowd of people from all walks of life paying their last respect for their beloved leader. He was really a people's leader who had gone away too early and his death if untimely. Very sad. May he rest in peace.

sudhir thats a nice piece put together. while i accept that we lost a charismatic leader it is high time to look at our crises management system. it took one full day for your system to locate. we need to build a lot on disaster management first and then on mitigation. the line of command goes hay wire during crises period. it happened in 26/11 and the same is repeating.will our policy makers look into it?

I agree with who made comments on Jagan's in experience and age factor. But to put the party together, experienced ministers around him may not be bad idea he is being given the post of CM ship. It is not always the Cm/PM who rule the state or country ,it is the bureaucrats.Watch him for a shortwhile he could do wonders to the state of Andhra after all he is the same genre of YSR. God bless him!!!

ysr has implented the programs and policies which he has announced. there are many programs which has been successfully implemented. ysr promised reservation of 4% to minorities in educational institutions and appointments. he has implemented successfully this reservation. he has implemented the fee reimbursement scheme for various courses particularly for minorities.he was champion for the weaker sections minorities and downtrodden. the 108 emergency service has saved many precious lives.he was loved by all sections of society.

Its strange that a politician like YSR who had an unnatural death is being praised as the best politician of AP!! Looks like people's memory is very short. No one is remembering those uncounted murders he encouraged his party workers against TDP when he came to power in 2004.

mr.sudhir your article compells me to write -YSR is a man VERY HIGHLY DYNAMIC-acted too in the same way-yet remained to the untimely DEMISE like our BLOVED RAJIVJI-young and being visionaries and did to the best during their only limited time-they are nearly very close in their approach -one to the whole nation and the other one to the state (AP)-yet they have proved the SONS OF THE SOIL. LET us not leave the persons who were very critical and assasinated them in all respects verbally all the time were NTR & CHANDRABABU NAIDU respectively. Today I ask the NATION and THE STATE to condemned them totally and RESPECT RAJIVJI & RAJASHEKHARJI too -they were very thoughtful visionaries and tried their best for the people of the NATION/STATE -all who descreditted them now or before should be condemned and should not be be given such a chance by the people to RULE them again -for the state of ANDHRA PRADESH is to TDP-they are the one's NTR all the time ridiculed and repeatedly critisized RAJIVJI like our CHANDRABABU NAIDU who did the same with our THE YSR. I also add few who were film fanatics were there with NTR are now with PRAJYARAJYAM should come out clearly and support the party and the PERSON who leads correctly and performs for the whole state but let not like TDP who benefitted themselves within themselves for example-FILMCITY,DOLPHIN,PRIYA PICKLES,SOMA DRINKS et.,.plus these are of MEDIA owners, like EENADU and ANDHRAJYOTHI etc., all know I just took to remind finally once again. Thank you MR.SUDHIRji. sai

YSR is a fighter, who fought the Telugu Desam and other parties. During his tenure, he built a huge empire which contained land banks in and aroung Hyderabad and other major cities, which he acquired through benami properties. My gestomate is that his son Jagan is one of the richest politicains in the world running into several thousands of crores. We must not ignore his political abilities to maneuveuring his party MLAs and MPs which is evident from the cry JAGAN THE CM. Unlike Chandrababu, he allowed politicians to take the spoils. He perpetuated one community at the cost of backward castes. His friend and advisor Ramachandra Rao has amassed huge wealth.

Sudhir, your article on Dr.YSR was a touching one. Thanks for putting it on the blog. A few months back I was one of those who hated YSR the most. But the way he has been doing things in his second term as CM,his concern for the development of poor masses has really moved me and I started liking him so much.It is indeed very correct calling Kadapah tiger.Cuddapah has seen lot of politicians making it big in the state politics but none of them will ever be close to YSR.The impact he has created on the people of AP state and the affection he has gained all over is evident from the public that gathered to have a lost glimpse of him at the LBS stadium and also during his last rites in Idupulapaya. May his soul rest in peace.May god give courage to his family members to overcome this tragic loss

YSR was an astuate politician. He did a turnaround and was an able administrator. Criss crossing religions and caste i think he did well to stay in power and excell. May his soul rest in peace

he was as controversial as indira gandhi and rajiv gandhi who were his political idols.now his son reminds us of sanjay gandhi post the electoral defeat of his motherin 1977.

It is irony of human behaviour, people realize after the expiry. When YSR was alive, some majority were praising him. But after his departure, every one is praising him. It is like saying that my buffalo was giving pot full of milk after its death. Do not look at a person with jaundiced eye. Look with clear eye. YSR is the greatest son of Andhra that has ever produced so far. We may get better man. Time can tell you please. May God Bless Andhra Pradesh and India.

Sudhir, Thank you for the touching article. I had never seen people having hope on Govt before YSR had become CM. People from my place had lot of faith on YSR and knew he will do good for us. Congress Party has lost their mascot of governance. People have lost a leader with great VISION. We miss you YS Anna.

YSR was best CM in Andhra till date and really changed life of many poor people through 108, Arogya Sree, Loans at a rate of 25 Paisa, free power for farmers etc. He is one of the politicians who learned from mistakes and delivered what people wanted from government. AP lost great leader. Hope congress government makes the right decisions to keep party together and deliver the promises made in elections this year.

This is rediculous, Why every body is telling thmeselves as telengans or mallus or kannadites or tamilans. Lets say together, we are indians, Yes it is a fact that we lost one of our good leaders. But we are not stopped by that, we will take the right decision and move ahead. We indians, dont have to do sentimental business telling the state or language name. always be one. It is easy to get separated, but it is really hard to be unique. Experience really counts, but what if you guys were telling about law and rules were true then, why can we replace with a good lawyer, may be the best. But that is not a leader, a leader should be the sincere in his every act and others should be motivated to do good deeds by just seeing him, not by telling that he has done or he is doing this and that. BROTHERS BE INDIANS ALWAYS, A Humble request.
