Meet Kamal Haasan on Your Call
Friday August 28, 2009

Kamal Haasan, one of South India's biggest superstars, yet completely unassuming.

Punctual, courteous and dressed formally in a suit, he's a world removed from the swaggers of our Bollywood stars...and a world removed in his views as well.

Political correctness isn't for him, as he talks frankly on why he hopes he will never join politics, but for me the real surprise came when he opened up on his two marriages.

Both were a compromise, he says, a price he had to pay for being with the women he loved, first Vani and then Sarika.....ultimately marriage he said was for society, a way to make sure they weren't questioned at hotel rooms.

Religion not for him either, as he puts it ' Thank God, I am a rationalist'.

Fascinating man and I think a fascinating show, with questioners ranging from Kanimozhi, Khushboo, Cho and his daughter Shruti Haasan.

Three years is a short time in the history of a three decade long extremist movement. But if television appearances are a barometer of success, from near anonymity in 2007 to steady fame in 2010, the Maoists have finally arrived.
