About Thiruvallur

The Tiruvallur Lok Sabha constituency voted on April 18. This is the third time the constituency went to polls after it was formed through delimitation rule in 2008. Voting for all the 38 parliamentary seats in Tamil Nadu also took place on the same day, April 18, in the second phase of general elections. 

It comprises Gummidipoondi, Ponneri, Tiruvallur and Poonamallee assembly segments, among which Ponneri and Poonamallee seats are reserved for candidates belonging to scheduled caste category.

Out of the 39 nominations filed for this seat, 20 candidates are contesting. 13 out of which have filed their nomination as independent candidates.

Sitting MP Dr. P Venugopal has filed his nomination from All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) party. In 2014 general election, he had won the seat with more than 6 lakh votes.

Dr Venugopal will contest against Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) candidate R. Anbuchezhian and Congress party nominated Dr. K. Jayakumar.

Among other contenders are C. Kalanithi (Anticorruption Dynamic Party), D. Ravi Pariyanar (Republican Party of India), Logarangan. M (Makkal Needhi Maiam) and M. Vetriselvi (Naam Tamilar Katchi).

As per the data shared by the Election Commission of India (ECI), the total electorate count in the constituency is 1946242. A total of 346 transgenders also exercised their franchise on April 18.
