About Virudhunagar

In the 2014 general elections, T Radhakrishnan of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam defeated Vaiko of Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK) in the Virudhunagar parliamentary constituency with a margin of 1,45,551 votes. Mr Radhakrishnan was polled 4,06,694 votes while the MDMK chief bagged 2,61,143 votes.

In the first general elections held in this newly formed Lok Sabha segment in 2009, after the 2008 delimitation process of parliamentary constituencies in India, Manicka Tagore of the Congress won the seat by defeating Mr Vaiko. The Congress candidate was then polled 3,07,187 votes and Mr Vaiko had garnered 2,91,423 votes.

In the 2019 general elections, Virudhunagar constituency is witnessing a three-way contest, in which former Member of Parliament of the constituency, Manickam Tagore of the Congress is facing R. Azhagarsamy of Vijayakanth-led Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK), the alliance partner of BJP and AIADMK in Tamil Nadu state and S. Paramasiva Ayyappan of T. T. V. Dhinakaran-led Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam (AMMK).

Virudhunagar Lok Sabha constituency comprises of following assembly segments: Virudhunagar, Sattur, Sivakasi, Aruppukottai, Tirumangalam and Thirupparankundram.
