In the 2014 general elections, AIADMK's J. Jeyasingh Thiyaraj Natterjee defeated Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK)'s P Jegan in Thoothukudi Lok Sabha constituency with a margin of 1,24,002 votes. The AIADMK candidate was polled 3,66,052 votes while his nearest rival bagged 2,42,050 votes.
Thoothukudi Lok Sabha constituency, a new segment which was formed with the 2008 delimitation process of Indian parliamentary constituencies, witnessed another general election in 2009, in which DMS's SR Jeyadurai won the polls defeating AIADMK's Dr. Cynthia Pandian.
In the Lok Sabha polls 2019, Tamil Nadu Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) President Tamilisai Soundararajan is crossing swords with DMK leader and Rajya Sabha member Kanimozhi in Thoothukudi.
Kanimozhi is the daughter of late DMK President M. Karunanidhi and the sister of current party President M.K.Stalin. On the other hand, Ms Soundararajan, is the daughter of Congress leader Kumari Ananthan.
There are also other parties in the fray like the Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) floated by actor-politician Kamal Haasan, T.T.V. Dhinakaran's AMMK and Naam Tamilar Katchi.
A total of 37 candidates will be vying for about 14.25 lakh voter's support.
The Thoothukudi Lok Sabha constituency consists of six assembly segments--Tiruchendur, Srivaikuntam, Thoothukudi, Ottapidaram, Kovilpatti and Vilathikulam.
