The Nilgiris Lok Sabha constituency will go to polls on April 18, in the second phase of general election 2019 or the 17th Lok Sabha election. The Nilgiris Lok Sabha seat comprises Bhavanisagar, Udhagamandalam, Gudalur, Coonoor, Mettuppalayam and Avanashi assembly seats. Among these seats except Udhagamandalam, Coonoor and Mettuppalayam rest are reserved for candidates belonging to scheduled caste category.

A total of 1365608 electorates have been registered this time from the Nilgiris constituency. The number of voters has increased in comparison to the last general election when there were 1269173 electorates.

In 2014 general election, AIADMK candidate C. Gopalakrishnan had won the Nilgiris Lok Sabha seat with 463700 votes. This time the party is fielding M. Thiyagarajan as its MP candidate for this seat.

DMK party which had received the second majority in vote count last time has given ticket to A. Raja for the second time in a row. A. Raja had received 358760 votes in 2014 general election.

R. Ashok Kumar has been nominated by the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) for the Nilgiris seat.

6 of the 10 contenders are contesting as independent candidates.

Among other key contenders is N. Rajenthiran nominated by Makkal Needhi Maiam party.

In the last election 46559 votes, which is 3.67% of the total votes, was exercised under the NOTA option.
