Salem Lok Sabha constituency, one of the total 39 Lok Sabha segments in Tamil Nadu state, goes to the polls in the second phase of general elections 2019 on April 18.

About Salem

In the 2014 General Elections, V. Pannersevlam from AIADMK was elected to parliament from the Salem seat in Tamil Nadu. He received 5,56,546 votes. His closes opponent was S. Umarani from DMK who received 2,88,936 votes. 

In 1971, E.R. Krishnan from DMK was elected to parliament from Salem. In 1977 general elections, P. Kannan from AIADMK was elected, then in 1980 C. Palaniappan was elected on a DMK ticket. 

Then in 1984, 1989, and 1991 Lok Sabha elections, Rangarajan Kumarmangalam won from Slaem on a Congress ticket. Then in 1996 R. Devadass from TMC (M) was elected followed by K. Ramamurthy in 1998 who was an independent candidate. 

In 1999, T. M. Selvaganpati from AIADMK was elected. In 2004, K.V. Thangkabalu was elected on a Congress ticket. In 2009, S. Semmalai was elected on an AIADMk ticket. 

There are six assembly segments under the Salem Lok Sabha constituency. These include Omalur, Salem North, Salem South, Salem West, Veerapandi, and Edappadi. 

For the 2019 General elections, AIADMk has fielded K.R.S. Saravanan while S.R. Prathiban is DMK candidate. M. Sadaiyan will contest on a ticket from BSP. 

Salem is considered to be a AIADMK stronghold and is also the home town of the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edapaddi Palaniswami.
