About Tenkasi

In the 2014 general elections, All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam's M Vasanthi defeated Dr Krishnaswamy of Puthiya Tamilagam party in Tenkasi Lok Sabha constituency with a margin of 1,61,774 votes. M Vasanthi was polled 4,24,586 while Krishnaswamy, founder of the Puthiya Tamilagam party, came second with 262812 votes. Tenkasi Lok Sabha constituency is a reserved seat for Scheduled Caste candidates.

In 1957, M Sankarapandian of Congress won this constituency by defeating N. Shanmugam of Communist Party of India (CPI).

In the subsequent general elections, R. S. Arumugam (1967) and A. M. Cnellachami (1971), both are from Congress, won this Lok Sabha constituency.

M Arunachalam represented this constituency six times consecutively, in which, 5 times (1977, 1980, 1984, 1989 and 1991) as a Congress candidate and once (1996) as a Tamil Manila Congress candidate.

AIADMK's S Murugesan wrested the constituency in 1998 and 1999, while, CPI's M Appadurai and P Lingam emerged victorious from this constituency in 2004 and 2009 respectively.

In 2019 general elections, Krishnaswamy, runner-up in last elections, is contesting as a candidate of AIADMK-led alliance in Tenkasi while DMK-Congress alliance has fielded Dhanush.M.Kumar.

Tenkasi Lok Sabha constituency consists of Tenkasi, Kadayanallur, Vasudevanallur (Reserved), Sankarankovil (Reserved), Rajapalayam and Srivilliputhur (Reserved) assembly segments.
