LTTE remnants regrouping?
Press Trust of India, Wednesday June 17, 2009, London

A month after their defeat in the hands of the Sri Lankan army, the remnants of the LTTE plan to re-organise and pursue the goal of a separate Tamil state from abroad, with the rebels' international relations chief Selvaras Pathmanathan taking the lead.

"The struggle of the people of Tamil Eelam has reached a new stage. It is time now for us to move forward with our political vision towards our freedom," Pathmanathan said in an e-mail audio file that has flown around the Tamil diaspora, the British media, including BBC and The Times, reported.

Pathmanathan, who is wanted by Interpol in connection with his role as the Tigers' main arms smuggler, gave no indication that the group would renounce violence but announced the establishment of a "provisional transnational government of Tamil Eelam".

He said Rudrakumaran Vishwanathan, their overseas-based legal adviser, would head a committee which would decide on a future course of action "within democratic principles".

Tamil Eelam is the name given by the Tigers to the north and eastern areas of Sri Lanka to which they lay claim.

Pathmanathan is one of a handful of senior cadres who escaped annihilation last month because he is based overseas. It is not clear from where has he issued the message, media reports said.

In the final phase of the battle, the troops eliminated the top Tamil Tiger leadership, including its supreme Velupillai Prabhakaran.

The Sri Lankan government has dismissed the so-called 'provisional transnational' government, pointing out that the LTTE does not exist any more.

"The LTTE is no longer a factor. It was military defeated and it cannot achieve a separate state even if it had the military prowess What can it do it now?" Lankan Media Minister Anura Priyadarshana Yapa was quoted as saying.

The pro-LTTE TamilNet did not carry Pathmanathan's statement and it is not clear if he is really in charge of the rebel remnants.

However, in a column, it has said the "need of the time now is the metamorphosis of the existing infrastructure into a democratic and inclusive transnational government of Eezham Tamils to strengthen the diaspora socially, economically and culturally; to achieve the goal of independence and sovereignty of Eezham Tamils in the home country and to meet
the international challenges internationally."

The Tamil diaspora, mostly in Canada, Australia and UK, has been donating millions of dollars for the LTTE cause.

The Tigers are a banned terrorist group in most Western countries. Last week, the founder of the British Tamil Association was sentenced to two years in jail for illegally procuring electrical components for the group.

It is not the time for the regrouping the Tamil militants in the name of revival of the Tamil Elam call. This regrouping will only make things more complicated to those who are already in the camps and also those who are now living in devastated places in the northern parts of the country. Perhaps this regrouping will, in the short run will only help the leaders who are in exile to get more funds in the Elam an or allow them to use the already banked funds in an unproductive way.During the past three decades most of the Tamils in the north and east suffered on account of the callous attitudes of the Sri Lankan Govt towards the plight of the Tamils. No doubt the ill treatments the Tamils received in the Hands of the Sri lanka Govt forced many youth to rose against the Govt and in the process not only there was one Prabaharan but hundreds of Prabaharan who waged a battle of cry against their plight. In the process, unfortunately late Prabaharan did the mistake of arming the youth and children with arms and ammunitions which in a way led to a bloody war in the inland. This does not absolve the Govt from its wrong doing. It is time for healing. The healing should now start immediately within Sri Lanka. Healing can not be done only by the Sri Lankan Govt. It need the support of the international Governments and other developmental organizations and one hopes and pray that the Sri Lankan Govt will soon realize the gravity of the situation and would allow others to do their parts in reconstructing the devastated inland and its families. The first and the foremost task are allowing all the displaced Tamils to return to their homes. To start with all those who lost their homes and properties during the last 2 decades need to given the priority. Secondly, all the devastated lands with mines, buried guns and electric wire need to be cleared and be made to productive lad. Thirdly, all the educational Intuitions right from the primary school to the college level be immediately be repaired, necessary infrastures be established, teachers to be appointed and then be made available to the students to pursue their education. There is need for staring vocational educational/ skill development centers so than all the youth who were in the LTTE and other outfits can take up some kind of job training. Fifthly, there is a need for opening up counseling centers thought the inland to give some kind of family counseling o all those who lost their kith and kin and their means of production. During the past three decades most of the Tamils in the north and east suffered on account of the callous attitudes of the Sri Lankan Govt towards the plight of the Tamils. No doubt the ill treatments the Tamils received in the Hands of the Sri lanka Govt forced many youth to rose against the Govt . My earnest appeal through these colums to all the right minded leaders , instutions and development organisation is not to support the call of re grouping till the complete reconsrtuction is completed in the inland. This itself will take another decade.
