Kapil Sibal, IIT council to discuss pay

After a two-month long tussle over pay scales and autonomy issues for the IITs, the Human Resource Development Minister Kapil Sibal will chair the first IIT council meeting on Monday. The council, the highest governing body for the IITs comprising around 30 members, is expected to frame a multi-pronged policy, including introducing scholarships and reducing of fee, to attract more foreign students at post-graduate level in the institutes. Importantly, the council is likely to ratify the revised pay structure of the IIT faculty. The new pay structure had attracted criticism from the faculty that went on a hunger strike on September 25.

IIT pay issue reaches PMO

The IIT faculty, which has been protesting "anomalies" in the pay structure, on Saturday, took their demands, including that for a better package at entry level, to the Prime Minister's Office. Representatives of IIT Faculty Federation met T K A Nair, Principal Secretary to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

IIT pay row: All issues resolved, says Sibal

After IIT professors approached the Prime Minister with their problems, Human Resource Development Minister Kapil Sibal held a meeting with them on Friday to end the deadlock. “All issues have been resolved. There’s no disagreement, we're on same side,” the minister said after the meeting.

The war between the Ministry of Human Resource Development (HRD) and IIT teachers is not over. Sibal said in a press conference, "We are hoping that there will be Nobel laureates coming out of our IIT system. But Nobel laureates don't go on hunger strikes. There is a certain decorum expected from people of the calibre of these IITs."
