Mid-air scuffle: What happened on flight IC 884?
NDTV Correspondent, Monday October 5, 2009, New Delhi
What happened in the cockpit of flight IC 884? There are charges of molestation, and even a scuffle between the crew - all while the flight was in mid air. But the bigger concern - was the safety of over 100 passengers compromised?

Now, there's a new revelation - the flight was allegedly put on auto mode so the pilots could fight with the crew.

The Captain of IC 884 Ranbir Arora says: "In the process of asking them (the airhostess and her friend) to go out of the cockpit, I had to actually push them outside cockpit as my first officer was hurt and bleeding. The entire conversation of Amit Khanna was for at least 10 minutes. From the time he came he started abusive language."

"We were insecure, however looking at the situation in the interest of life safety and the airlines, we did not inform APC of this kind of unlawful interference of flight operation," he added.

Ranbir accepts that IC 884 flew over Pakistan unmonitored for nearly 10 minutes.

Meanwhile, the airhostess, Komal Singh, who was involved in the mid air scuffle and had filed a case of molestation, on Monday met the chairperson of National Commission for Women.

"We are looking into the matter," said Girija Vyas, chairperson, National Commission of Women.

Air India is investigating the issue, but maintains that at no point was passenger safety compromised, and that the cockpit was never unmanned.

With each day, a new revelation and with each revelation, the realisation that the passengers were lucky that the flight landed safely in Delhi.

It is well known that Air India's pilots are one of the most arrogant in Industry. They believe that they are the lord and masters and look down upon the rest of the crew including Engineers and Cabin Crew. The cabin crew are no exceptions. They are probably one of the rudest in the Industry. Even if one set of crew had behaved professionally, this incident would not have happenned. Air India needs to train their employees in Customer Service and in common courtesies. I have seen ticketing personnel in Air India's Bangalore office abuse passengers. I have seen counter staff at Bangalore Airport behave disrespectfully with passengers. I have vowed never to fly Air India unless the airline reinvests itself.

Is 100 passenger is big number in India? I don't think so. Since when India started thinking about their Citizens? Don't worry guys, you and me will be thinking all this here but the real people (authority & governance) they don't care about us. They care about money and power only.
