Irom Sharmila's strike enters 10th year
Kishalay Bhattacharjee, Monday November 2, 2009, Imphal

Manipur is India's most disturbed state today, with more than two dozen militant outfits at war with the Indian security forces. But there's another war that the security forces wage her - .people's confidence in them is at an all-time low with a series of deaths that seem to be fake encounters. The army has described these as counter-insurgency operations. Locals say that line is wearing thin.

Symbolizing what the people want is Irom Sharmila, whose hunger strike enters its tenth year on Monday. Her one point-agenda: stop the Armed Forces Special Act which gives the army extraordinary powers and immunity.

Sharmila began her struggle on November 2, 2000 after ten persons were gunned down by security forces at Malom in Imphal. Since last year, more women have joined her in a relay hunger strike.

Those who support Irom Sharmila have decided to celebrate her story of resistance in a week-long Festival of Hope and Justice in Imphal. Among them, noted author Mahashweta Devi, who says, "She's fighting for human rights, we will try our level best to join her and force the Government of India to withdraw the forces .... What she has done hasn't been done anywhere in the world. She's fighting for truth. "

The woman being honoured won't be able to attend the festival.  She is under arrest, locked in a hospital room, being force-fed on charges of attempted suicide.  That's how she has spent the last nine years.

I am shocked. I never new that something like this is happening or had happened in the eastern part of my country. Ironically So much unworthy has been brought to public eyes by media and this important news just didnt go through. I don't know the full story of Manipur. Though after looking at few snippets on different news bulletin, I have developed huge respect to this lady now. I would treat her at par with Mahatma Gandhiji... though it would also mean that I should be looked as an englishman in 1900. I fairly look apologetic as I stand with my country and countrymen who have done stood either against humanity or with ignorance. I just hope that the media brings itself at par at puts her story on top. I don't want to blame the politics or the army or any other indian because I voted for them and paid taxes for them to secure my home... but I do would hope and pray for Irom Sharmila and her casue.

Dear Indian, 2 people were killed in Fake encounter in Imphal city, barely 500 Metres from the State Assembly. Police called it as one of the victim was a terrorist where as pictures revealed something else. Since than, organisations are demanding resignation of the CM as he has also been found guilty (by making false statements about the incident) and our CM "SIR" LOVES HIS CHAIR SO MUCH so that its been 3 months and he isn't ready to leave his chair even after the schools are shut for almost 2 months now, demanding his resignation. Hats off to Indian Politics, Central Govt and Indian Politicians. Its an achievement Dear Chief Minister Sir... and also another best part, National Media doesnt want to focus on such news as small cities and these things doesn't increase TRP (its purely my opinion) !!!
