Number One won, Number Two too
Monday June 22, 2009
It was the team that did not have any member playing for the IPL that won. But Sri Lanka, with their fantastic combination of art and science of cricket, won the hearts.

So, the team that did not have any member playing for the IPL has finally emerged champion for the ICC T20 World Cup. I am hardly one to suggest a conspiracy theory against the IPL but I wonder if more should be read into this coincidence.

Am I happy that Pakistan has won? Honestly, I would have preferred to see Sri Lanka win since I always believed that they looked a more complete side. On the day of the final, I must say, Pakistan deserved to win since they played better.

For every ball that Shahid Afridi blasted outside the ground in the last two matches sending Pakistani supporters delirious with joy, the skill of Tilakratne Dilshan in finding the boundaries was winning hearts around the world. He may have missed out in the final but still ended as the player of the tournament.

Umar Gul just could not stop bowling the yorkers in the death overs, troubling batsmen with the reverse swing, as the master craftsman Murali reminded people around the world that he could still command respect, irrespective of the nature of the game.

Abdul Razzaq, sneaking back into the site after quitting the rebel ICL, proved his class with the odd chance that he got, as Angel Mathews did enough, with the bat and ball, to add himself as the 'fourth M', adding to the list of Muralitharan, Mendis and Malinga.

If the final did not justify its billing as the big bang game, Pakistan were responsible - there was little drama when they batted. Former captain Wasim Akram correctly said that this was the first final that Pakistan had won without any panic. If Sri Lanka did not score enough, as the captain also said in the end, their batsmen did not live up to the reputation that they had earned.

It is interesting to compare Pakistan's T20 World Cup win with the 1992 World Cup win, when Imran Khan was the captain.

As a college student, watching the matches live from Australia, I remember Pakistan losing by 10 wickets against West Indies despite scoring over 200. They were bowled out for 74 against England but managed to get a point from the match as the match was rained out soon after England started to bat. I also remember Pakistan being bowled out for 173 while chasing 216 that India had made. (I spoke to Javagal Srinath once who remembered bowling out Javed Miandad and narrated me how India desperately wanted to win that match). But the brilliance of Inzamam ul Haq saw them past a tight situation in the semi finals before they beat England in the finals.

The run up for the team in this tournament was no better. They lost the warm up matches, with India beating them comfortably by nine wickets. They struggled during the initial part of the tournament. Afridi in particular looked completely off colour. The openers did not seem to click and the batting order was in a mess. And then Afridi decided to take the semi final by the scruff of the neck, in a manner that only he can, to confirm the chokers tag for South Africa.

For Pakistan, a country ravaged by internal strife, this perhaps means a lot more than just a victory. Sri Lanka, who, in my opinion, also played like champions did not have a good day on the field.

Throughout the tournament, Sri Lanka won the hearts, Pakistan won the trophy.

PS: Is there also a lesson for the Indian captain on the way the Pakistan batting order was reshuffled? In a crunch match, Afridi was sent higher up the order just to make sure that the man who could turn around the match could get to play longer than others. Remember, who did Dhoni send? Ravindra Jadeja!!

As said above, Pakistan has the capability to take on any side but everyone also does know that Pakistan is a self-disastrous team. They might start well but suddenly there will be a turn around and they'll be losing their way. This has been happening for years but I congratulate them for holding their nerves this time. They did it in style for their county. And about Sri Lanka, yes they were truly amazing right from the start of the tournament. Infact few matches which they won were solely based on their bowling and fielding. But on the final day, they were unlucky to meet a strong and determined Pakistan side. And one cannot forget Dilshan for the kind of knocks he provided for Sri lanka, I really admired his batting. Umar Gul and Afridi were quite impressive too. Talking about Dhoni, I was shattered when I saw Jadeja taking guard and that on that slow wicket. I was wondering why on earth Dhoni had to send him early up the order when there was Yuvraj in blistering form. I never thought a person of Dhoni's calibre will do such a terrible mistake. And for Jadeja, he cannot be blamed as he tried to play to his potential but was just unfortunate. Anyways, finally all cricketers are humans and humans are prone to error. Iam confident that Dhoni will learn from his mistakes and will reach great heights being India's captain.

I think you are a little biased against Pakistan. They deserve to get praise for their win, like India was praised despite being in a desperate situation during the last T20 World Cup.

Well,i will say that mostly the Indian posts always show a bit of under the heart appreciation for Pakistan even if they show they do sincerely. Being South African,i always wished not to face Pakistan bec the matches which they even lost were merely bad planning.and if u say winning hearts,I think if you were in the UK,you could see who won the hearts.Every person was talking about Afridi,Gul and Younas. Its true that Kallis,Dilshan also got a good reputation but Pakistani attracyed the crowd and frankly, they won the hearts and strongly deserved the trophy. Good luck to South Africa in the future

We should support dhoni... we praised him when he opted for J.Sharma for the final onver in last T20 world cup final..which could hve gone either way... now we criticise for promoting Jadeja... Dhoni is a human and cricket is just a sport..we loose some and we win some... Stand n support the captain at all times ...

In a T-20 match, performance on that day counts. Pakistan defeated two undefeated teams in the tournament.Short of match practice and lack of international support,it speaks volumes of their resoluteness and determination. For a terror struck country, this a positive aspect and the cricketing nations cannot ignore Pakistan.

Yeah, one can never forgive Dhoni for his stupidity. He is overated as a Captain. Even when he captained Chennai Super Kings he brought in two awful bowlers Ghoni and Balaji in crunch situations , only to lose crucial matches. I don't know about the Indian cricket team. But I believe Chennai Super Kings deserve a better captain.

Your comments are sincerely in bad taste. Rather than giving credit to the Pakistani side for comming back from the brink of an early exit to winning the tournament, you have just limited their effrots to a mere stroke of luck. They deserve better than that. Pakistan, even at the start of the tournament was a strong side, capable of taking on any opponent. They just needed a cohesive and consistent strategy to perform, which was given to them by their captain. Pakistan truly deserved to win as much as Sri Lanka. Umar Gul and Afridi won millions of heart aorund the world with their spectacular performance. If you expected SL to win, that doesn't mean that they lost due to bad luck and Pakistan won due to sheer stroke of luck. History shall remember who won the 2009 T20 world cup and not who won the hearts

I do not agree with this article that pakistan won the trophy only and sri lanka the hearts . Not only me but loads of people would agree that pakistan not only won the trophy but also the hearts . For a team that was boycotted in the IPL due to rising indo-pak tension , devoid of any international level cricket for last 2 years and still not only managing to win the world championship of 20-20 cricket but also defeating the two unbeaten teams along the way is no mean a feat . They really fought like a team and once again proved that there is no dearth of talent in pakistan and they are of capable of being world beaters .

Very rightly said Ashu. Even though Pak won the trophy, SRL was able to win millions of hearts around the world. There is no denying the fact that SRL played like true champs and emerged as the most deserving team for the trophy. Not only does the team have a wonderful and inspiring captain but also an interesting batting line up and a superb bowling attack. The innovations that players like Dilshan, Mendis, Malinga and the young Mathews made not only changed the way the game is played but it also made SRL the most exciting team to watch. This team with its brilliant captain, fantastic players and humble set-up has surely a long way to go!

Iam sure many of the players may be feeling very upset becoz had they won T20 they would have ruled the advertisement world and made millions and laughed all the way to bank

I dont think in T20 you can term any team complete. If you see the overall record of Pakistan and Srilanka when they have played against each other, its equal in all respect. Pakistan won it because they deserved it. They picked it up at the right time and they are the only team who defeated South Africa and Sri Lanka. Pakistan deserved to win the trophy and congratulations to them.

I agree with you but it was only a try which dhoni tried but i agree that he must not have tried in a important match like that. But we all appreciated dhoni in all his moves that he was successful but just for a mistake like this he should not be criticised like this.

Really... there is something which Dhoni can learn about batting order.
