Mumbai constable, 4 others held for extortion

Mumbai: Five persons, including a police constable, were arrested on charges of extortion and abetment to suicide after a Gujarati couple ended their lives in Mumbai last week, police said on Tuesday.

Prakash Brahmabhatt (42) and his wife Archana (39) -- residents of Jogeshwari -- jumped before a moving train on April 23 between Malad and Kandivali stations.

When the police started a probe, they found a suicide note at their residence in which it was stated that five persons were harassing them for Rs 6 lakh they had borrowed from a relative of two of them.

Following this, constable Shivaji Churmule and his associates, Sayyed Sajid Sher Ali, Imran Ismail Kadiwal, Sayyed Saleem Hasumiya and Sayyed Abdul Sattar were nabbed on Monday and booked under IPC sections 306 (abetment of suicide), 384 (extortion) and 34 (acts done by several persons with common intention).

Prakash, who was into garment business, had two years ago taken Rs 6 lakh from Imran and Sayyed Ali's sister, but was unable to return the money, police said.

Prakash and his wife were then harassed by the five, including Churmule, who was attached to Oshiwara police station, they said.
