11/11/2009, 2 pm (IST): Maharashtra Chief Minister has said emergency services have been
activated and people in low-lying areas have been put on alert. Extra
local trains are being run to take people home quickly. It hasn't been
raining in Mumbai for over an hour.
11/11/2009, 1 pm (IST): The state government has asked all schools to shut for the day.
Children already in school are being sent home as soon as possible and
afternoon session not to be held.
11/11/2009, 12 noon (IST): Cyclone Phyan is now 250 km south south-west of Mumbai and 500km from Surat. It has covered 100kms in the past 6 hours.
11/11/2009, 11 am (IST): Cyclone Phyan is 250 Km west north-west
coastal belt of Konkan, 350 km south south-west of Mumbai; 620 Km south
south-west of Surat (to cross by midnight). The cyclone will not hit Mumbai directly as was thought earlier, but
will cause heavy rains in the city as well as inland Maharashtra.
11/11/2009, 10 am (IST): Cyclone Phyan is likely between Alibaug and Valsad by late evening or night. The wind speed of Cyclone Phyan is said to be 70 to 80 km per hour,
which is much less than Cyclone Aila that had hit the Bengal coast in
May this year. It's raining consistently in Mumbai. Winds have picked up and the temperature has come down.
11/11/2009, 9 am (IST): Cyclone Phyan at level 6; Met department has advised people in low-lying areas in Mumbai to vacate. Rough weather is expected in Mumbai in the afternoon. Ports will have to reduce activities and take safety measure
11/11/2009, 8 am (IST) : Cyclone Phyan is now located 250 km west north-west of Goa, 350 km south south-west of Mumbai and 600 km from Surat. It has already started impacting the coast of north Maharashtra. Strong winds will commence anytime soon along the coast. Total rainfall in Mumbai was 39mm till 5.30 am. The cyclone is likely to cross Dhanu and Mahva in Gujarat around midnight on Wednesday. |
