Raj Thackeray's men attack Abu Azmi
NDTV Correspondent, Monday November 9, 2009, Mumbai

As the new members of the Maharashtra Assembly were being sworn in, Raj Thackeray's men went on the offensive.

Thackeray's men slapped Abu Azmi, Samajwadi Party leader, and grabbed the microphone. They claim this was to protest against Azmi who was taking his oath in Hindi.

For several days, Thackeray has been publicly demanding that the oath for all MLAs be administered only in Marathi. Azmi had resisted, saying he was entitled to take the oath in the national language. "I asked to take the oath in Hindi since I don't know Marathi. I respect Marathi as much as my own mother," said Azmi after the attack against him.

"Hindi is not a national language. In states like Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra...Hindi is not used. Azmi has been offending the Marathi Manoos. He has been given a fitting reply," said Shirish Parkar, Spokesperson, MNS. When asked if the violence was demeaning for the Assembly, he responded, "Illiterate states like UP have witnessed far murkier scenes. This is for the pride of Maharashtra."

Thackeray's Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) has 13 MLAs in the new Assembly. The chief minister, Ashok Chavan, has demanded action against Thackeray's MLAs.

In Sixties lingistic chauvanism was at its high in Maharastra and Tamil Nadu. While in Tamil Nadu now it is more a show of sound bytes than real, it is tragic that in the states like Karnataka and Maharastra the chauvanists are still ruling the roost.

Is brute strength and the ability to remove wooden podium with one hand is the qualification to be an MLA/MP- ours%u2019 representative in the state/nation? If so, our Constitution and vibrant democracy is heading for disastrous state of affairs and frightening dimensions. The solemn Constitutional ceremony turned hooliganism by the legislators of MNS had paused every Indians, pointing to the road to fascism. Time has come to ponder steps that a democratic public and a tolerant egalitarian society should consider to put an end to such shameful and outrageous conduct by the legislators of a political party that swears allegiance to our gloriously pluralistic Constitution. Initiate criminal proceedings and punish the unruly legislators, who see political advantage in escalating theirs%u2019 challenge to the Constitution and the rule of law and winning publicity for it. Not doing so now, and allowing the situation to drift reasons for pusillanimity or political convenience, is likely to threaten our democratic template itself. The best traditions of our Constitution and democratic governance can%u2019t be hijacked to serve the narrow and selfish ambitions of one party or one group of legislators. It is painful to see our wonderful vibrant democracy is rooting away, especially at states, where democracy has failed, or is teetering on the brink of collapse. It is time to implement zero tolerance to the dirty department of politics- bribing MLA%u2019s, disrupting the parliament/assembly houses, foster defection, and corruption to cling to power. Thereafter, we and our political class as a whole may reclaim our loosing ideals and can restore our democracy to its early glory, the reflection of our nation. Dear members of the legislators and parliament, it is time to wake up our conscience and stand on, %u201Cwhether do we have a vision/dream to realize the societal transformation of developmental politics for revitalizing, sustaining and growing in our democracy?%u201D
